Acknowledging Racism

Well guys. I went and did it. I perpetuated racism and didn't realize it, and I am writing this to acknowledge it, apologize for it, and work to do better.

Gone With the Wind is a racist book, and I had no clue.

I did a post a few months back sharing my top 10 favorite books of all time, and Gone With the Wind has held the top spot on my list since I was 16. Erika commented on that post and said {in portion} 'Now that more time has passed and I'm a little more aware of the problematic depictions and tropes in the book, I question whether I would still enjoy it as much if I read it.' I had NEVER once thought about that, and honestly, at the time didn't give it much thought. Erika and I emailed a little about it, and I didn't change my mind about the book and went about my merry way.

Then another black man was murdered for being black {Ahmaud Arbery}. And I saw a very thought-provoking post on IG by @blackcoffeewithwhitefriends. I'm going to type it here because it was that impactful.

The New York Times ran a piece called 'What We Know About the Shooting Death of Ahmaud Arbery'. But here is what I know:

1) He's dead because our country has never made amends for millions of black lives snuffed out by chattel slavery, lynchings, the criminal justice system, vigilante injustice, stop n frisk, war on drugs.

2) He's dead because Becky and Karen's fragile feelings matter more than justice.

3) He's dead because Thomas Jefferson and George Washington can still be someone's favorite president, and...

4) Gone With the Wind can still be someone's favorite movie.

5) He's dead because Confederate soldiers were pardoned and honored with holidays, monuments, and parks in the 1880s and 1980s.

6) He's dead because Abraham Lincoln and LBJ are seen as liberators not complicated white men who happened to be politicians.

7) He's dead because Birth of a Nation was screened at the White House and praised by President Wilson.

8) He's dead because 'Make America Great Again' isn't a slogan but a weapon.

9) He's dead because George Zimmerman is free.

10) He's dead because 'I don't see color' is a valid reason to chant 'All Lives Matter', and 'Blue Lives Matter', and 'White Lives Matter'.

11) He's dead because, 'There were very fine people on both sides.'

12) He's dead because the Confederate flag can be a hat, a bumper sticker, a t-shirt, a blanket.

13) He's dead because plantations are wedding venues.

14) He's dead because thousands can cheer, 'Send her back!!!!!'

15) He's dead because the white church says nothing and will not say his name, or Trayvon's, Sandra's, or Freddie's, like it never said Emmett's, Addie Mae's, Cynthia's, Carole's, or Carol Denise's.

16) He's dead because we had a black president and we're even, so let's not talk about race anymore.

...there was a little more, but you can see that this is a lot to think about and process. As I read it and saw #4, my heart stopped. WHAT? In my head I did a lot of sputtering 'No, GWTW isn't racist.' 'Okay, this said the movie, but surely that doesn't mean the book.' 'Let me google...ooooh this doesn't look good.' I tried to make excuses in my head, I felt really embarrassed, and I basically behaved like the entitled white woman that I am. The small upside is all of this happened in my own head.

Then I put on my big girl pants and thought about this critically trying to use things I learned in White Fragility - and I did a few things. I asked a {white} friend her opinion {it isn't a POC's job to teach me}, I thought about what I read about the stereotypes {the 'happy' slave} in the book and what it does for the anti-racist narrative {nothing}. And it dawned on me in utter embarrassment - this book is racist.

How am I a 39-year-old woman who reads multiple books a year about anti-racism and claims to be raising her children to do better...and my favorite book is racist?

And not that this acknowledgement is much in the scheme of things - I don't have a big blog following so I love you guys but a million people won't see this - but every little thing I do adds up. And I need to take ownership for my behavior.

I am sorry for my racism. I have removed Gone With the Wind from my favorite book list. I apologized to a friend I recently recommended the book to. I will do better.

Thankful

I am thankful for Today. After Trent's illness and seeing truly sick children, I am thankful for every day I am here on this earth. {Don't you just love my block T? Gig 'em!}

I am thankful for my Home. Brent and I have built a small space that is our space, and I love having a place to call our own.

I am thankful for the promise of Always from Brent. No matter how many mistakes I make and the fact that he probably shouldn't love me, he does.

I am thankful for my Nursing relationship with Drew. 11 months and going strong!

I am thankful for my Kids! No brainer on this one! {grin}

I am thankful for my Friends. My peeps bring me joy everyday, and I'm so glad they love me, flaws and all.

I am thankful for time to Unwind for the next few days. I am still so behind at work from being out for Trent's illness, so it's nice to spend some time not thinking about how behind I am!

I am thankful for the abundance of Love in my life. My cup runeth over.

Craziness

The last few days have been really interesting around here...and not because of having a newborn in the house!

First, I never blogged about Hagan having baby Luke. He arrived on November 21, about 2 1/2 weeks early due to Hagan having pre-eclampsia. Well, over the weekend he got RSV and spent several days in the hospital. At one point, there was concern that he had a bacterial infection in his blood and potentially had meningitis. Luckily, he didn't but RSV is bad enough for a 7 week old! He is home now and doing good! But as a reminder to all moms, we must be diligent in keeping everyone clean. When Trent comes home, we strip his clothes off and wash his hands and face. We are also washing his blanket and jacket really frequently and pumping him full of vitamins! Ashlee wrote a great post on AMB about germs and staying healthy.

Luke getting sprung!

Then Patty started having contractions. Then she started swelling. Then she went to the doctor where there was protein found in her urine and her blood pressure was elevated. She was monitored in the hospital for a few hours and got released to go home on bed rest for awhile. She is only 35 weeks pregnant, so we need BP3 to cook a little longer!

So the Swope girls really need to settle down!!! And if anyone wanted to pray for my sister and cousin and their boys, we'd sure appreciate it.

Randoms

  • I may be a CPA, but Brent and I JUST finished our taxes this week.  Slacker much?
  • Trent got a weird rash today at school.  Teachers saw it after morning recess.  I'm hoping it's just heat rash.
  • Trent loves a show on Nick Jr. called Team Umizoomi.  I had never heard of it until the other day.  It's actually really cute and educational.  Ever heard of it?
  • I'm really looking forward to this weekend, lots of family time!
  • My dear friend, Kelly, had a second miscarriage this week.  Will you keep  her and her husband in your thoughts?  My heart breaks for her.
  • I accidentally ground up an icing tip in the garbage disposal.  You know, the main one I need for Blair's birthday cake.  As if I wasn't nervous enough that I'd mess it up.
  • I have THIRTY recorded Ellen's on the DVR...unwatched.  Part of me wants to just delete them, but I can't bring myself to do it.
  • It has been so nice to leave work when the sun is out.  Still super busy but slacking a little. {grin}
  • 15 years ago today, I told Brent he was my boyfriend.  (Yup, I am such a romantic.)  According to him, this anniversary doesn't count, but it is and always will be a special day to me.  Love that man!

Mama Drama **UPDATED**

UPDATE: Mom's doctor said the procedure was a success!  He 'zapped' several spots he had zapped last time and found some new spots to zap when he had her heart in arrhythmia.  Bottom line - He was able to stop the arrhythmia!!  She's resting comfortably at the hospital and can come home tomorrow.  Thanks again for the prayers!!

Remember when I had to take my mom to the emergency room?  Well, today is her ablation to fix her heart yet again.  We're praying that this time the procedure takes and for peace and strength for her and my dad.  Can I ask y'all again for prayers?  I'll update today's post after the procedure.  She'll have to spend the night tonight at the heart hospital but should be home tomorrow!  Thanks in advance for the prayers, they are truly appreciated!

Saying Their Prayers

We're saying our prayers tonight for all the families who lost their homes in the fires in central Texas and for all the firefighters using this Labor Day to help.

We're giving thanks that we are safe.

Don't ask me why Trent is 'praying' with his hands covering his ears. {grin}

Uncle Butch

My Uncle Butch passed away last night.  He was diagnosed with cancer on Sunday.  Our family is in shock, but in true Lindemann fashion are pulling together to honor and remember the biggest brother of a brood of 7.  It is amazing to me to watch my mom and her siblings - the faith my grandparents gave them is just breathtaking, and I hope to be as strong someday.  My uncle had numerous physical ailments and knowing his body is healed and he's with his parents and my aunt who passed away many years ago does bring such peace.

Update on the Mama

Thank you so much for all the kind words and prayers!  It means so much to me and my family.  My mom was especially touched when I told her so many of her former students were praying for her.  She was able to go home Tuesday night after being in the hospital for several hours.  Her heart stayed in a-fib for over 4 hours, and it was one of her worst episodes.  The discharge nurse told her to call her doctor (duh) and to call an ambulance next time!  Mom was supposed to go see her heart doctor yesterday, but he had to cancel for an emergency surgery, so now she is back on the medicine that she does not like (it makes her feel terrible) and will be going to the doctor next week.  So we're just hoping for no episodes (or at least no bad ones!) and a solution soon!!

2 of my faves!

Prayer Request

My mom has always had an irregular heart beat.  Almost 3 years ago, she had an ablation to fix it.  It took...until this summer.  She's been having some spells this summer with a really fast and irregular heart beat.  Her heart doctor is stumped as to why the ablation worked for so long and stopped, and he has been trying to fix it with meds...and they haven't been working.  Today it was really bad, and I took her to the emergency room.  She's still there (with my dad), but we don't have any information.  When we were on our way to the hospital, she squeezed my hand and said 'Today is the first time I've been scared.'  My mom is so brave, so wonderful and so loved.  So I'm asking for prayers for my mom tonight.  That the doctors figure out what is wrong and can fix it.  That my dad is strong for her.  That she isn't scared anymore.  Thank you from the bottom of my heart.

Refresh Everything

It's been a long time since I have blogged about baby Jordan.  To refresh your memory, Jordan's mommy is a family friend from childhood.  She and my sister were BFFs way back in the day.  Don't know if I ever blogged about this before, but my dad even hit Kristen's brother, Brad, in the face with a bowling ball (accidentally of course) causing him to need stitches in elementary school. {grin}  Anyway, back to Jordan.  After going into remission in the spring, her cancer is back.  Her parents have a request (Kristen, I am copying from your blog - hope you don't mind):

Pepsi is sponsoring a grant contest providing $250,000 to the top two vote recipients. Arms Wide Open is a group competing for Dr. Cheung's research lab at MSKCC. Dr. Cheung invented the 3F8 antibody treatment that Jordan underwent this spring. His lab is working to find ways to make the antibodies stronger as well as to bypass the resistance issue (which caused problems for Jordan). You can vote for Arms Wide Open by texting 73774 and entering the code 102653. You can also visit the website HERE and vote online. Voting runs through the end of September, and you can text and vote online one time each day. Arms Wide Open is in fourth place so they only need to move two more spots to win.

Brent and I talk often of how much we cherish our time with Trent and try to live in the now with him.  It's fun to think about him as a 'big boy', but I am savoring every moment of his 'baby-ness' (of course he will always be my baby!).  I cannot even imagine the emotions Jordan's family struggles with daily, and I wish SO hard that no family ever had to.  I read several blogs about children who have previously been ill or babies who have passed away (makes me so sad but just can't help it) and get upset at the 'unfairness' of it all.  Children should always outlive their parents and everyone should live to be 85 and die peacefully in their sleep.  Obviously that isn't reality, and it makes me feel helpless.  When I can do something to help others, I do it.  It makes me feel like I'm making a difference and helping the world be a better place for my children and the Jordans of the world.  So if you have it in you, please vote and pass along this website to everyone you know.  Maybe we can make a difference for even 1 person and wouldn't that be amazing?

I'm a Mess

Layla Grace went to heaven this morning. Please remember her and her family in your prayers. Please also remember Jordan as she fights the same nasty disease.

Layla Grace

Warning: This is a sad post (at least to me). I can't stop thinking about this little girl. I literally check their Twitter page every few hours, and I cry (more like sob) every time I look at it. In my living room. In my office at work. {Embarrassing.} I just don't get it. I know I never will. I'm sure Layla's mother would trade place with her in a heart beat. I would. I didn't understand unconditional love until I had Trent. I mean, I love my husband dearly, but would I die for him? I don't know. Probably not. {Gasp.} But I would die for Trent right now. Without question. There's just something about looking at his innocent face and wanting him to have a full life. And knowing I would do anything to give him that. But it's not always that simple. Sometimes we can't will things to change. I hope (and believe) something good will come from her short life. Celebrities are tweeting about her left and right, trying to raise money and awareness for Neuroblastoma. People's relationships with God are growing from reading their blog. 2 very wonderful things. But I know her mother would rather have her. I would. One last thing - while I have your attention - please don't forget to check in on and pray for baby Jordan. She is another precious baby girl fighting Neuroblastoma, and her mom is a lifelong family friend. Not to tell you what to do, but please remember both Layla and Jordan tonight and give your families an extra hug and kiss tonight.

Praying for Baby Jordan

I don't usually feel comfortable making prayer requests on my blog, but this story is breaking my heart, and I'm hoping we can flood this family with love and prayers. Kristen was my sisters BFF for many years growing up. She's a fellow P.H.S. grad and has an 11 month old daughter, Jordan. Jordan has stage 4 neuroblastoma and will be having surgery tomorrow to remove a tumor. She will also have to have chemotherapy. As a mother, this is heartbreaking. Cancer is such a scary, scary disease! Please go to Kristen's blog and pass this blog along so that we can surround this family with prayers and love as they go through this journey.

Bonfire

I can't believe it's been 10 years since the A&M Bonfire collapsed and killed 12 students. I still remember that day like it was yesterday...what I was doing...what it was like to be on campus... Just wanted to send up a prayer for the families of all the victims. Gig 'em!

40 Week Check-Up

Just back from my 40 week appointment. Baby Boy must really like it inside...no change from last week...still 1 cm dilated and 75-80% effaced. We have a tentative induction set for Tuesday (June 30), but she wants to see me the day before first, and if she doesn't like my cervix (she didn't today), we're cancelling the induction... So pray that Baby Boy decides to come out on his own before then or that my cervix makes my doctor happy on Monday!! :)

I also thought I'd give you an update on Stephanie (my friend who is having twins). She has made it past 32 weeks and is on daily monitoring in the hospital. She will be having her babies on Monday via c-section. Her son weighs almost 4 pounds and her daugher weighs almost 2 1/2 pounds. Pray for a safe delivery and that the babies gain strength quickly so that they don't have to stay in the NICU for too long.

I'm having another afternoon visitor (Patty and Miles), so I will post some pictures of my precious nephew later!!

Baby x3

I met Stephanie on Monday in Gruene for dinner at The Gristmill (yum!). I haven't seen Stephanie since we were both early in pregnancy, and we thought she was only having 1 baby. She told me that her doctors said a normal twin pregnancy looks like a full-term single pregnancy around 25-27 weeks. Stephanie is 25 weeks, and I'm 32 weeks in this picture - she is nowhere near as big as me! I'm going to say it's because she's 3 inches taller. ;)

As a side bar, Stephanie is having a boy and a girl (how fun!!), and Baby Girl is not growing as she should be. Please take a minute to send up a prayer for their family and especially their daughter.
