Show & Tell Tuesday: How We Named the Kiddos!

I'm linking up with Momfessionals again for another Show & Tell Tuesday. I really liked this topic: How we picked our kids' names.

Trent Joseph {Here's his birth story}

Man, Brent and I fought over naming Trent. We always knew a boy would have Brent's middle name {Joseph} and a girl would have mine {Kathleen}. But our first born was 'Baby Boy' from 20 weeks onward, and we couldn't come close to agreeing on anything past xx Joseph. Names we discussed included Miller, Brewer, Rylan, Drew, Carson...to name a few. But nothing even made the short list when we went to have him. I was pulling for Miller, and I honestly can't even remember what Brent liked. Probably Drew. Because he wanted to call him D.J. {Gag}

Having the last name Gurley makes it challenging to name kids. For a boy, Brent knew it needs to be a strong name to offset the tease-able last name. I didn't like anything beginning with a 'G' {sounded too cutesy}, and I wanted a name to not be in the Social Security's Top 100. {If you don't know, roughly every spring the SS Administration will publish rankings of names from the previous year. You can search by state, you can look at as far out as top 1,000, you can go back over 100 years, it is so fun!} Brent thought that was a dumb requirement. I thought Drew Joseph a.k.a. D.J. was stupid. You can see where we stood.

Then...he was born!!! I just knew after the agony of labor and pushing for almost an hour and a half, Brent would give in, and Baby Boy would be Miller. Well, apparently stitches in your hoo-ha get you exactly...squat from my husband! So we were back to square one.

At night on July 1 {more than 24 hours after Baby Boy was born}, we were still stumped, and Brent decided it was time to get serious. So HE started looking at the SS Administration page. One thing to note is the resemblance between Baby Boy and Brent. We got so many comments on how they favored each other. So Brent randomly threw out the name Trent {#312}. Hmmm... I started marinating on that name because it seemed like a way of naming him Jr. without actually having him be a Jr. When I was nursing Trent in the middle of the night that night, I looked at him and just KNEW he was Trent. It was perfect, just perfect.

Well. Enter the dream squasher...my husband. The next morning, he decided he wasn't that fond of Trent anymore. Was it too cute to have them be Brent and Trent? NO!!! He looks like you, he's your son, let's go with it! Brent decided the 'fair' thing to do would be to flip coins. Trent {my fave} vs. Drew {his fave}. The winner of that would go against Carson {a name neither of us absolutely despised}.

As he pulled out a quarter to start flipping, I started crying. My baby just couldn't be Carson or Drew. HE WAS TRENT. When I told Brent why I was crying, he gave up and said 'Just fill out the birth certificate paperwork.' And I did! I might have promised Brent that we'd name our second baby Drew, but I was lying if we were to ever have another boy, so I hoped for a girl next!

Drew Kathleen {Here's her birth story: part 1 & part 2}

If you thought naming a daughter would be easier for my husband and me given how we ended up naming Trent...well...you'd be wrong.

It seemed in the 3 1/2 years between our children, we got pickier about our requirements. Still couldn't be in the top 100, still had to be careful to make it not too cutesy when paired with Gurley {nothing starting with a G or ending in an 'e' sound to rhyme}, and now we knew we liked 1 syllable names. We did figure out we liked boy names for girls. Yes, Drew was on the list {not even in the top 1,000}, and quite a high contender, but was it THE name? We weren't sure. Alex, Sam, Tate, Ellis {the one 2 syllable name I liked}...other names I really liked that Brent wasn't sold on.

So when labor began on January 2, we went to the hospital for the second time with an unnamed child.

January 3 rolled around, and we were taking a walk up and down the halls of the hospital pushing our little unnamed girl in her basket, and we looked at each other and said 'Well, should it be Drew?' And that was that! Brent got his way and Trent's leftover name did indeed become our second born's name. Thank God we had a girl!

It was definitely a challenge to name our babies, and I don't foresee it getting any easier for any future children {Yes, Brent, there'll be ONE MORE...maybe}, but at least we will know what we're getting into!

Confession Wednesday

I am linking up with Karen's Confession Wednesday.

Confession Wednesday Button

  • Today is Thursday, not Wednesday.
  • One of the two cutest nephews in the world turned 2 yesterday!
  • I have the cutest idea for Brent for Valentine's Day. I am so excited.
  • I may or may not have taken a picture of our microwave after cleaning it and texted it to Brent because it was nasty.

  • We made our last house selections yesterday! I am still on cloud 9 with the last selections we made - I am in love with this house! If I'm not boring everyone, I'll do another post and add all this last stuff {carpet, wood, tile, backsplashes, granite...we've been busy}.
  • Allison and I have 2 Best Picture nominees left to see...we're hitting one up tomorrow night!
  • We all have coughs and general yuckiness. I am so over winter. Brent and I were both huffing peppermint oil last night to clear our sinuses. It worked, but I'm sure we looked goofy!

Confession Wednesday

No offense to Kristen, but I didn't like today's #NovemberBlogathon topic {writing an apology letter to someone}. So I am going to participate in Karen's Confession Wednesday.

Confession Wednesday Button

I confess that...

It is 2:21 PM, and I am still in my pajamas. I had a meeting that started at 8:00, so my reason for getting dressed {taking the kids to school} didn't happen because my parents had to take them! Have I ever said before I love working from home?

I did brush my teeth. And wash my face...I think.

I strongly believe People Magazine has nailed it once again.

I am beyond ready for the holidays to commence! I need some family time, yummy food, and vacation days! I am not ready for more 25* weather. WTF Texas? Although I guess our 10 day forecast looks mighty wonderful!

What are you confessing today??

Lying {A Story}

Brent every once in a while brings up this random story from high school where I supposedly lied/cheated on a quiz. He said something to Trent about lying this weekend and said {jokingly} 'Why don't you ask Mommy about lying?' And I knew EXACTLY what story he was referencing. Then, this morning, the teacher from that class passed away. And it got me thinking even more about that story.

And after SIXTEEN years of him swearing I was a cheater and SIXTEEN years of me saying I wasn't {and okay maybe if I was a little bit it was his fault}, I decided to bring this to a vote.

Allena and Brent circa 1998...doesn't she look so innocent?
And would NEVER cheat?

Brent and I began dating our junior year of high school. Our high school was pretty big and our class graduated 500 students {501 to be exact as I, Class President, have the list from planning our 10 year reunion a few years back}. Brent and I only ever had 1 class together in all of high school, and it was during our senior year after we'd been dating for almost a year. It was a Government/Economics class taught by Mr. Boucher {RIP}.

Mr. Boucher was a pretty unconventional teacher. We had lively debates and a pretty unstructured class schedule. There was 1 random table in the middle of the classroom, and it was at this table that Brent and I sat. And mostly passed my notebook back and forth {where I was supposed to be taking class notes} writing silly high school things to each other. {And I still have this notebook and can attest that yes, high schoolers are that dumb.}

Anyway, we were studying economics at one point and going over supply-and-demand. We had a quiz over it. {Which chart represents when the demand for peanut better is high but the supply is low} I'm rocking away at my quiz when I hear Brent mutter under his breath {Remember, we're at the same table} 'This can't be right.'

Well, if it were you, what would you have done when you heard that statement? You'd look at his quiz to see what he was talking about. And I notice his answers go A, B, C, D, E, F...etc. And I look back at my quiz...and notice mine don't go in that order. So I start looking at my questions again and realize I've got some mixed up, and Brent is indeed correct.

I change my answers and we both get a 100.

Brent has always said that my actions were cheating. I counter that he called my attention to his paper which made me question my own paper and change my answer. I also counter that I wasn't done yet and the further I got into the quiz, I would have realized I had some wrong.

For SIXTEEN YEARS he has harassed me about this quiz.

Now you be the judge. Would you say I cheated?

iPhone Photo Dump

Time for a photo dump! I have lots of random photos I want to share and no real good topic for any of them. {grin}

I absolutely love taking these 2 on wagon rides. It has been so cold and wet lately we've been cooped up inside, boo. I love that T was cold and wore D's blanket like a cape. Then he wanted me to walk fast enough to make his cap fly. That boy!

Watching basketball. I foresee this scene for many years to come.

My girls. Seriously. This picture makes my ovaries jump.

Trent had to wear these ridiculous shorts for his ortho check-up last week. Brent and I couldn't stop laughing and T was getting so mad at us.

Confessions

  • I love when babies fart. Drew stretches and farts and it cracks me up.
  • Drew sleeps on my chest most of the day which is really cramping my blogging style. So there probably won't be a ton of blogging right now. Although I have lots of topics in my head.
  • I hate baby hiccups. Especially in the middle of the night.
  • I also hate diaper changes in the night. Always means we're going to wake-up a little bit, probably get the hiccups, and spend a good while not wanting to go back to sleep.
  • Drew had her 2 week checkup yesterday. She is 90% in height and head circumference and 95-98% in weight. She is above her birth weight! And only getting up {most nights} twice a night!!
  • If you don't want to read about babies...my blog probably isn't the place to be right now.
  • Patty is doing good - no baby yet!
  • I need to download pictures from my phone and camera. Drew is soooo cute. {grin}
  • We're adjusting to a family of 4 pretty good. I think the hardest part is feeling like Trent is being jipped. The logical part of me knows this is a transition period and that Drew needs me now. I know he's fine, but the mommy part of my heart worries.

So Over...

I am over...

  • Hip pain while 'trying' to sleep
  • Not being able to sleep
  • Work...last day is 12/21!! {OMG, that's 1 month away!!!}
  • Spending money - it is stressful! {New monitor, bedding/furniture/decorations for the kids' rooms, new car seat base, new Christmas tree, doula*, my placenta*...it's a long list}
  • Gaining weight
  • Peeing all.the.time {because I'm literally drinking a gallon of water a day}
  • Drinking a gallon of water a day
  • A growing to-do list

Realize, please, that I say all this in jest.  I am so thankful for this pregnancy and this baby, but I think God makes the end so uncomfortable to take away any fears you might have about having a baby, ha.

*Blog posts to explain soon

Confessions

  • I am reading a biography of the Queen Mother and have been for WEEKS - maybe even MONTHS by now. I keep stopping to read other books.  Ha!
  • I have watched the Glee season finale probably 3 times.
  • The result of the above?  I had a dream last night I was a princess and that Finn Hudson was in love with me.  Too much maybe?
  • I'm thinking of tackling the challenge of potty training Trent in June.  It is a FIGHT to change his diaper and he can 'go' when prompted...  Any advice?
  • I have done almost nothing to get ready for Trent's 2nd birthday party.  All of the sudden it's almost here.  FAIL.
  • Speaking of Trent...all he wants to do these days is watch videos of trash trucks, mowers, blowers, weedeaters on You Tube.  Yup, I said trash trucks.
Aw, I feel better now having confessed!
