Thoughts on International Women's Day
March is Women's History Month and Monday was International Women's Day. Anyone else not know about this? Just me? I felt real dumb when I read International Women's Day has been celebrated since 1911!
The older I get the more I try to reflect on, appreciate, and learn from these special months. I enjoyed continuing talking about diversity during Black History Month and learning about Black historical figures with the kids but hadn't thought much about Women's History Month before this week...mainly since I'd never heard about it! {grin}
HOWEVER, Monday, my company did an amazing celebration of Women with a 3-hour conference. It gave me all the feels and led me to really think about being a woman, being a girl mom, and what I want to BE as a woman/mother.
- Being happy in my own skin. There are several things I am uncomfortable with currently as I age - I am graying RAPIDLY, wrinkles are popping up quickly, my belly is full of saggy skin and stretch marks {thanks giant babies}, I have weight I want to lose. What I want my girls to see is that I love myself. I try really hard not to talk negatively about my body or to talk about weight and size. I tell my girls I exercise and eat good foods so I can have a strong body and live a long time, not so I can be skinny. This one is for sure a work in progress and I have a lot to learn about body positivity, but I'm getting there!
- Natural is beautiful. Similar but also different from being happy in my own skin, I want my girls to know they don't need to change a single thing about themselves. I shared a few years back that I didn't want to dye my hair because it's a pain and expensive with hair this dark...but that doesn't mean I love my grays. I also get more self-conscious of my aging face as time goes on. But I decided a long time ago that I never wanted to feel like I couldn't leave my house without a full face of makeup, and so far, I still feel that way...most of the time. You will never see me getting Botox or having plastic surgery. I have no issues with anyone else do anything they want that makes them happy...but the example I want to set for my girls is that they are beautiful the way God {and their dad and I!} made them.
- Kind is cool. I don't want to raise mean girls. One of my flaws is a love of gossip, and I don't like that about myself. I want my girls to know better!
- How to be a friend. Nothing is better than a group of women friends! For the support, unconditional love, ear when you just need to vent about your job/children/husband/anything! We are at our best as women when we support each other and there has been too much tearing each other down.
- You can be anything you want! I want my girls to know the sky is the limit, and anything they want to achieve is possible.
- Recognize your privilege. Just the other night, Trent and I talked about him hitting all the points of privilege {white, male, Christian, heterosexual, middle class}, and the girls hit almost all of them. I didn't understand privilege until more recently, and I want my girls to recognize their privilege early on and use it for good and to make the world a better place. As Layla Saad talks about often, I want to be a good ancestor and teach my girls that too.

Ten Questions About Motherhood
Another set of questions I borrowed from Natasha! I really thought these questions about motherhood were SO interesting!
1. Did you have siblings as a child? Do you have children at home now? If so, tell us more about them.
I don't think I need to answer whether I have children at home...or honestly either of these questions, but I'll talk a little more about my sister here!
I became a mom at 28 {Brent was 29}. Brent and I had been married for about 4.5 years and only tried for a few months before getting pregnant. We had our second child when we were 32 and our third when we were 36.
3. Are your children biological or adopted?
All of our children are biological. We actually talked about adopting instead of having a 3rd but I loved being pregnant, delivery, and breastfeeding and didn't want to miss out on those experiences. I'm obviously SO thankful we have Paige, but this might make me sound a little selfish.
4. If you have children, did you deliver them naturally or with pain meds or by c-section? If you adopted a baby, how old was he/she when you brought them home?
I delivered all 3 vaginally with very different circumstances - Trent was a planned induction at 40 weeks, 3 days using pitocin and I had an epidural, Drew I had completely drug-free at 41 weeks, and Paige was an unplanned induction sort of at 41 weeks, 6 days {I went into labor but things stalled so I had pitocin and then needed an epidural}. Trent's labor was 12 hours, Drew's was just over 5, and Paige's was close to 24 hours of misery, ha.
You can read their birth stories if so inclined by clicking HERE.
5. Did you breast feed, bottle feed or pump for your babies?
I breastfed all 3 - Trent for 14 months and both girls for 2.5 years. We also used bottles for when I was away {but it was always breast milk} and once the kids went to daycare.
6. Have you potty trained babies? Cloth diapers or disposable?
EVERYONE IS POTTY TRAINED! We used a combination of cloth diapers and disposables when they were all babies. Trent and Drew both potty trained at 2.5 for daytime, Trent was closer to 5 for nighttime and Drew was right at 4 for nighttime. Paige potty trained at 18 months during the day and is waking up dry consistently just in the last month or two {although after our double bed wetting night a few weeks ago she is still sleeping in diapers}.
7. Have you taken prenatal or parenting classes for your babies? Home school, private school or public school?
We took a birth class through our OB with Trent and a pain management class before Drew since my goal was to have her without medication. All our kids go to a public charter school as of this year, yay {discussed more below}!
8. What is the significance of your children's names? If you could pick another name for yourself, would you? What would it be?
I blogged about how we named each of our children {Trent, Drew, and Paige}. Only their middle names have any significance {Trent and Brent share a middle name, Drew and I share a middle name, and Paige's celebrates her birthday being right before Christmas}, but they all follow the same syllable pattern - 1-2-2 and I made sure that none of their names were super popular using the social security administrations name database {nerd alert}.
I've never liked my name, but I don't have a name I wish I had instead. I have always liked my middle name, Kathleen, and tried for about a day when I was a kid to go by it ha.
9. If you have children, did you travel with them as babies? Did you use childcare for your children? Playdates?
We have not done much traveling in our lives as a whole, but what little we do, we have largely done without children. I know a lot of people talk about just taking their kids and going, but that always scared me too much to try it often!
All 3 of our kids went to daycare when I returned to work. Luckily, my company has amazing benefits, and I was able to be off work for about 6 months with all 3. Trent went to a traditional daycare {national chain} from 9 months until he was almost 5, Drew went to the same daycare from 6 months to 14 months, and then we switched to a Montessori school. Paige started at that same Montessori school at 8 months. They all now still go to a Montessori school, but they are all now at a public charter in our town.
10. What is one lesson you learned or one takeaway from being a parent?
Parenting is incredibly hard, and we all need to give ourselves grace. You do the best you can and keep trying every day.

Quarantine Mother's Day 2020
Monday I took the kids to my parents' house and my sister did the same with her kids. We stayed outside 99% of the time, took a walk down to the creek by their house, celebrated our mom and Blair's birthday {which was in April}. The cousins were ecstatic to be together after not seeing each other for 3 months! We practiced as much social distancing as we could with 6 kids ages 3-11.
And sadly I got no pictures with our parents, ha!
Another Quarantine Adventure in the books!

You Win Some, You Lose Some
Some of the good...
- I've lost 2 pounds so far this month! Slowly working my way toward my goal, yay!
Some of the bad...
- I ate my weight in lasagna last night, oops!
- We've managed to keep the kids' diets pretty decent. [minus some extra snacks we ordered from Amazon]
Some of the bad...
- I think the kids are only brushing their teeth once a day. At least they are brushing them? And they are definitely not showering consistently!
Some of the good...
- We are spending a lot more time outside.
Some of the bad...
- But the kids are definitely getting extra screen time. It isn't INSANE, but I am trying to relieve my Mom Guilt over screen time right now...
Some of the good...
- I have started drinking my coffee with NO sweetener! I don't love it, but it's manageable!
Some of the bad...
- I REALLY want a Chai...and might be making that happen today! Sugar, I just can't completely quit you!
Some of the good...
- I have been so impressed at how quickly Drew picked up bike riding once we finally tackled it. Now we need to tackle shoe tying. Coronavirus is slowing us down enough to tackle all these things a 7-year-old should already know, ha.
Some of the bad...
- We can't go very far because her bike is too small, and it is super hard pedaling a bike that is too small. I think we're going to go get an old one my parents have though!
Some of the good...
- I love all the extra family time - I feel like we are making a lot of new habits that I hope stick and making good memories. Drew and Trent have been so much better with each other, and we're all doing a lot more together.
Some of the bad...
- With all this togetherness, there is definitely a lot more fighting, ha!
What are some of the good and bad things happening for you!?!?

Anatomy of a Kitchen Counter
Whew! That didn't even seem to get as bad as it does sometimes, and it still got pretty awful during the middle of the day.
How do you handle clutter in your house?
