COVID Had Me Like...

It was bound to happen, but here we are - Brent and I had COVID last week. I know people who have already had it at least twice, so I am very thankful it hasn't happened more but sheesh the last 9 days have not been the most fun of my life!

Tuesday, May 31 Day 0! I got a pretty bad headache starting in the afternoon but didn't think too much about it because I get a bad headache periodically - usually in hindsight it's from being dehydrated - so I just started upping my water intake and went about life as normal.

Wednesday, June 1 The headache continued into Wednesday {also not uncommon when I get a bad headache} but as the day went on I started to notice some sinus pressure and drainage. I wasn't worried about it until I just felt like I had fever and sure enough, I had just over 100 degree temperature. I was a little concerned but thought I might be getting a sinus infection - totally what it felt like.

Thursday, June 2 I woke and just knew I was pretty sick. My throat was on fire {in the long run, my worst symptom}, I had body aches, headache was still there, fever, runny nose, drainage. Brent was getting ready to go to work, so we decided I needed to take a COVID test. First off, just to be responsible, but secondly, there was no way I could take care of the kids that day. Sure enough, and not surprisingly, positive.

Not nearly as exciting as a positive pregnancy test! {grin}

Brent obviously stayed home, let his team know he wouldn't be in, I told the babysitter what was happening so she wouldn't come over, texted Brent's parents {who had kept the kids the day before}, friends, my parents, my work, etc. I took 2 work calls that were pretty important and then I went back to bed. Frankly, I was exhausted and felt like shit.

The next 2 days passed pretty much the same way - I felt pretty crummy, slept a lot, and was alone in our room. Brent slept on the couch and took care of the kids, the house, his work. Friday night he noticed a little tickle in his throat and some slight achiness...uh-oh.

I rewatched a lot of Downton Abbey
The Spanish Flu episode hit especially hard, ha.

Tea with the Dowager while watching the Dowager!

I lived off of tea with honey and cough drops with occasional tiny meals {think Goldfish, so not really 'meals'} because it just hurt my throat too much to eat.

Saturday, June 4 My fever broke and Brent started running fever, so while I should not have been taking care of the kids, Brent and I switched places. He went to the bed, and I went to the couch. The kids basically stayed on their side of the house, spent an insane amount of time on devices and would come as far as the entrance to the kitchen to ask for food. I'd get up, wash my hands, put on a mask, go make them food, and take it to the playroom {but they had to leave the playroom first}, and then they could come get the food after I left the room. The diffuser ran non-stop with germ-fighting oils! The girls were pretty pitiful and sad about not being able to snuggle or cuddle with me. So sad!

Sunday, June 5 We tested Brent and the kids for COVID. Obviously, we knew Brent had it, but he wanted to take a test - sure enough, that positive line formed instantly ha. But all 3 kids were negative yay! Brent's fever broke, and he was already feeling better - excellent news as my fever came back and I started going downhill -although my sore throat was gone after 3 days and didn't come back, yay. We switched again, and I went back to the bedroom.

Monday, June 6 My fever broke again, and I needed to work, so I worked a full day in the office. My congestion got terrible, and I realized I couldn't smell anything. I was messaging throughout the day with my doctor's office to talk about supplements, checking when we could come out of quarantine, when the kids were safe to be around people, all the things. I had a burst of energy late in the day and did some laundry and cleaned up the kitchen. Unfortunately, that energy left and my headache, body aches, and fever came back, boo!

Tuesday, June 7 After more messaging with my doctor's office, I scheduled a telemed appointment. I saw one of the nurse practitioners who said I definitely sounded like I had a secondary bacterial infection and she prescribed antibiotics and steroids for that, which I happily started Tuesday evening. No fever, my congestion cleared up, but I still couldn't smell.

Wednesday, June 8 I woke up fever free, felt 95% normal, and could smell! I was curious if the loss of smell was going to preclude a loss of taste, but that didn't seem to happen. We tested the kids again today - all negative still!

My favorite sight - 3 negative kiddos!

It seems like we might be in the clear, and even though I didn't feel great, I had what is still considered a mild case, so I'm very thankful it passed as quickly as it did, no one besides Brent got sick {and his case was super mild}, and we seem to be on the other side. I'm not excited to do this again anytime soon, but it sounds like that's going to be the normal going forward. Oh boy!

2 Years After

I literally can't believe we've been living in a COVID world for 2 years. In some ways it feels like COVID has always been here and in others, it still feels so fresh and raw. I thought it would be fun to think about how life was different 2 years ago, share some fun memories, and see if anything good came out of it, ha.

Our last book club for a LONG time!
This was on the Friday night before the world stopped...this is a naive group!

Stocking up for '2 weeks to flatten the curve' HA

One great thing we started was our driveway happy hours!

This cutie was a lot of fun!

I can still do jazzercise online! A definite benefit to COVID.
It was a life-saver at the time, and I'm still thankful for it today.

Can't be mad that alcohol delivery stuck around.
Although Brent sure looks mad, ha.

We, like everyone, baked bread.

Nature scavenger hunt - the bluebonnets showed up in 2020!

Our first family Zoom call! Who knew Zoom would become so important?

The first {of many} quarantine memes that spoke to me!

The kids came through for me for a great bluebonnet picture!
The bluebonnets are struggling this year, I'm so upset!

I treated myself to an Apple Watch over quarantine, and I still LOVE it!

We had our first drive-by parade!

We went nuts and bought this monstrosity! {grin}
We still use it, though, so it was money well spent.

The kids nailed quarantine Easter pics

Working from home with 3 kids, 2 of whom were doing online school, was no joke.

I sort of learned how to give haircuts, this is the BEFORE.

The AFTER! I am currently retired though!

I'll end with maybe my favorite picture - our porch-traits were a great memory!

I'm definitely so glad to be mostly on the other side of this. Our life is 95% 'normal', and after going through these pictures and memories, I am so thankful for that!

10 Questions To Mark One Year Of The Pandemic

I thought this questionnaire was really interesting to fill out and look back on the last year. AND y'all know I love a good questionnaire, especially ones Natasha and Emily fill out. {grin}

It's also interesting to fill this out as Trent starts a 2-week quarantine from school due to a classmate testing positive. WILL THIS CONTINUE FOREVER?!?!

1. What was life like in early 2020?

Life in early 2020 was just business as usual. Brent and I were both working, the kids were in school, they were all involved in activities - Trent was playing basketball, Drew and Paige were in dance, and Drew had started horseback riding.

2. What was the biggest change?

Having everyone home! I went from working at home by myself with Brent at his office and the kids at school to everyone being home ALL.THE.TIME. Juggling work responsibilities with home schooling plus just general parenting during the day was CRAZY. Luckily everyone was in the same boat, but it certainly wasn't my preferred way to live/work!

3. What were your coping mechanisms?

I feel like I handled things pretty well most of the time, but I had a lot of anxiety around access to food. It was hard to get a curbside pickup order, I was scared to go inside the store, etc. I got in a good routine of booking orders 2 weeks out at our local grocery store and also had food delivered from Imperfect Foods for a while. Things were definitely in short supply for a while, and I spent a lot of time agonizing over meals and fresh fruits and veggies, but as things in quarantine settled down, so did my anxiety.

We also drank a lot of alcohol. {grin}

4. What did connection in your relationships look like?

We are lucky to have some of our best friends live in our neighborhood. At first we would stand outside and talk in driveways. Then we started having a weekly socially distant happy hour. Those were glorious nights! We also zoomed with family, and eventually {after about 2 months} started seeing family.

Driveway HHs!

The first time we saw my parents - outside with no touching!

5. What will you remember most?

The family time. I am very blessed {#privileged} that mine and Brent's jobs were never in jeopardy, and we genuinely like each other. Yes, there was added stress of everyone being home, but I love my family and really enjoyed the extra time together {most of the time}.

6. What was the biggest challenge?

Just the juggling of work responsibilities, parenting responsibilities, school responsibilities with no extra help. It was good in the sense that we learned we CAN do it, but it's definitely not what I want my normal to be!

Paige entertained herself while Brent and I were on calls by coloring her whole face... with lipstick! SO FUN!

7. What was a beautiful memory?

It was really fun spoiling and surprising Brent on his 40th birthday. I got him 40 presents, the kids made a banner, we had a yard sign, and some friends and family came by for a parade. He's not one that asks to do much for his birthday, but I really wanted to spoil him and glad we got to!

8.
What did you believe now that you didn't one year ago?

That something like this was even possible. I think because there have been things in the past that were threatened to be huge {swine flu comes to mind} that didn't effect my life at all, I blew this off at first. I couldn't believe entire sports seasons were being canceled, schools were closing, it just didn't seem possible. While I don't think we handled things perfectly, I now believe a global pandemic is very real.

9. What would you do differently?

I don't know that there is anything that would have made me feel differently in the moment, but I would like to be better prepared if something similar happened again. Brent has complained our entire marriage that we never have enough food, and I think we have a completely different pantry/freezer situation than we used to. Is it perfect? No. But would I feel better about our food situation? Yes.

10. What will you carry forward?

Hopefully an appreciation for the happiness I feel in my everyday life. I always KNEW I was lucky to have a loving and happy marriage/family life, but to be 'stuck' together and truly enjoy each other...was really a huge blessing.

Reminiscing...One Year Later

Our kids are on Spring Break this week, and I can't help but think back to last Spring Break and what was going on at that time. Our 1 week Spring Break became '2 weeks to flatten the curve' and here we are a year later, ha. We are definitely in a much better position but it's all just SO WEIRD.

Let's take a little walk down memory lane, mmm-k?

I had a lot of anxiety about running out of food, so I did overbuy it.
I've had enough therapy to know how to handle that anxiety, so I did ok with it.

Book Club the night before the world changed.
The next day I started seeing all the information about staying home.
Really hoping I can see all these ladies in person NEXT MONTH!

I think this was the first Quarantine meme I saw and instantly loved it!

Texas at least showed up and gave us an AMAZING bluebonnet season.
This year...not so much. Due to the ice storm, I have seen very few bluebonnets.
I keep hoping they are just going to bloom late this year, eek. Super sad.

Our first family zoom! The kids did have fun, I promise.

Learning to work with the kids home EVERY day was super fun.

Jazzercise {corporate} and my local gym came through with online workouts!
A year later they are still going strong, and I'm so thankful!!

One upside was for sure lots of family time!

Our first porch girls night!! These are my ladies!

We found fun ways to celebrate holidays alone!
Bonus: I think we will go to church for Easter this year,
and they can wear these outfits again, yay!

I learned to cut hair! But have since retired. {grin}

We definitely supported local businesses too!
Alcohol delivery FTW!

Looking back there were a lot of great memories that I could share, but I'll stop here. Yes, the last year has been hard, and I will be SO HAPPY when it's normal {whatever that means}, but it wasn't all bad!

Spiraling

 Anyone struggling with the implications of rising COVID cases? My mind is a hot mess as I wonder about school, work, economy, illness, upcoming holidays, everything. Part of me wants to blog about it to get it out, and part of me wants to bottle it up and shove it back down.

So let's look at some memes that made me laugh recently, shall we? {grin}

Any of these really speaking to you right now? Please tell me I'm not alone with the spiraling thoughts!
