Cutest piano player ever.  And he makes the most beautiful music. {grin}

My husband hit the nail on the head yesterday.  My blog has gotten boring.  I'm not really complaining because it means life is good - status quo, routine, mundane - ha.  I guess there are a few noteworthy things going on I can share...although like Brent said, it'll probably be boring. {grin}
  • Brent closed his first deal yesterday on the new job.  Yay!
  • Trent turns 18 months old tomorrow.  WHAT?  Where has the time gone?  I'll put together a separate post after we go to the doctor next week.
  • I am officially on a reduced workload at work.  I am working 90% of full-time which averages to 42 hours/week.  Sounds really reduced, huh?  Ha.  Over time I hope to get that down to like 30 hours/week, but that means Brent needs to close more than 1 deal.
So was Brent right?  Am I just totally boring or what?

Movie Review: The Fighter

Allison and I are going to attempt to see all the 'award' movies this year.  We've said this several years in a row and have always failed in our attempt.  But this year, we really mean it! {grin}  So expect reviews as we make our way through a lot of potentially 'artsy' movies.  First up, 'The Fighter'.  Luckily our husbands were also interested (as well as Patty and David), so we had a nice little group of 6 for this film.

Synopsis: A look at the early years of boxer "Irish" Micky Ward and his brother who helped train him before going pro in the mid 1990s.

Review:  This movie had it all - drama, romance, action, comedy, hot guys!  Although Christian Bale looks TERRIBLE as a crack head.  Micky has a lot to overcome to be a successful boxer, and the story and acting are just great.  We all really enjoyed the movie, and I'll be curious to see how it does during all the awards this year...

Book Review: Juliet

American Julie Jacobs travels to Siena in search of her Italian heritage--and possibly an inheritance--only to discover she is descended from 14th-century Giulietta Tomei, whose love for Romeo defied their feuding families and inspired Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet. Julie's hunt leads her to the families' descendants, still living in Siena, still feuding, and still struggling under the curse of the friar who wished a plague on both their houses. Julie's unraveling of the past is assisted by a Felliniesque contessa and the contessa's handsome nephew, and complicated by mobsters, police, and a mysterious motorcyclist. To understand what happened centuries ago, in the previous generation, and all around her, Julie relies on relics: a painting, a journal, a dagger, a ring. {Taken from}

I thought this book was so good!  It's really 2 stories for the price of 1, and I enjoyed both.  It had a little bit of mystery, a little bit of romance, a little action...  It was neat having a new twist on 'Romeo & Juliet' and a modern story unraveling the curse.  It took me a while to read this book but only because I was so sidetracked by Glee {grin}.  I stayed up way too late last night reading about 200 pages to finish the book because I just couldn't put it down!

My New Obsession: Glee

I think I'm pretty easy to please when it comes to entertainment.  I'm not a snob about movies or music or books, and I like a wide variety of styles.  I love most things cheesy and mainly like stuff that just makes me smile.  Glee totally meets that criteria and more.  It's really a no-brainer if you know me.
  • High school drama (without being TOO much drama) - CHECK
  • Cute boys played by actors that are my age (no cougar here...unlike my friend Rhonda and her sick love for Taylor Lautner...grin) - CHECK
  • Musical with singing and dancing in every episode - CHECK
So if any of this critera sounds like you, Glee will just make you smile.  I have spent the last 2 weeks catching all 32 episodes aired to-date and have laughed out loud until I was crying.  Check it out!

The Worst Christmas Carols

I love Christmas.  Like L.O.V.E. Christmas.  The reason for the season.  The decorations.  The food.  The time with family.  The lights.  The days off work. Especially the carols.  However, there are a few carols that make me want to rip my own ears off or destroy my radio.
  1. Christmas Shoes {Seriously?  This song is DEPRESSING.  Not at all about Christmas IMO.}
  2. I Want a Hippopotamus for Christmas {Ridiculous.  Kid, you are stupid.}
  3. All I Want for Christmas is My 2 Front Teeth {Little girl, those teeth are going to grow in, and you are going to look goofy for 3+ years.  Let's save Christmas wishes for better things (like toys), okay?}
  4. The Chipmunk song {Just plain silly}
  5. Anything carol sung by The Carpenters or Amy Grant {I like bubblegum pop, but this is just too much bubblegum for even me.}
What am I missing from the terrible Christmas song list?

What Have I Been Doing?

I have been MIA for a few days.  I don't like when I'm not blogging regularly or checking in on all the blogs I love.  But it's been a busy few days.  With what?  So glad you asked!
  • Getting our Christmas cards done!!  Yippee!
  • Shopping, shopping, shopping (mostly online) - almost done with Christmas presents!
  • Having this cold turn into a sinus infection.  Yuck.  Hello antibiotics!
  • Traveling across this great state of Texas for work (Dallas, San Antonio and Odessa - yeehaw).
  • Falling IN LOVE with Glee!  I am so behind on shows that started when I was having an extended vacation in crazy town.  But I'm trying to catch up!  When I finish Season 1 I'm going to do a review post.  I'm sure you're on the edge of your seat for that. {grin}

It's Been One of Those Days

Trent is sick.  Nothing major, just a cold.  But it's not fun to pin your child to the floor with your feet to put drops in his eyes and wipe the crusties off his face (all while he's screaming).  And of course Brent left for work training this morning in Dallas.  Sigh.  I submitted a bunch of forms in at work and my counselor butchered them.  Sigh.  I have a bunch of big fat question marks on my Christmas list.  I don't like any of our pictures for a Christmas card.  The holidays shouldn't be stressful but they always seem to be (and I don't like that).  Sigh.  So I'm eating Pillsbury icing straight out of the canister.  And it's definitely making me feel better. {grin}  What do you do when it's just 'one of those days'?

Monday, December 6, 2010

I look at these 2 pictures and die laughing.  Maybe they're not funny to you, but I know they are to me and my sister.

"Seriously Mom.  Enough pictures already."
"Does this paci make me look fat?"
"Get me out of this bed.  Now."

Miles: "Why are you people always making me hang out with this kid?"
"There's a WHAT in my mommy's belly?"
"What makes you think I give a crap about these caterpillars?  Babies."

Gym Rats

One of my aunts works for a school district Athletic Department.  As a part of the athletic department is a gymastics training facility.  So while in Dallas before Thanksgiving, we took the boys up there and let them go wild.  I don't know if either of the boys laughed so hard or had so much fun.  I'm so thankful to get to enjoy moments like this with my boys!

Enjoying the trampolines
 Playing hard and having so much fun!

Sneak Peek

I normally save my favorite picture of Trent from any given event for the end of a post.  But I have at least 2 collages to make from the big event I hinted to a few posts ago, and I have been focusing on creating a few Christmas presents in my spare I decided to share my favorite picture from the day.  Any guesses as to what my precious baby did?

Reading Gone Wrong

'Hey boys!  Let's read a book!'

Trent: This page is my favorite...I love to grab the caterpillars.
Miles: Quit hogging the book.  Maybe I want to grab a caterpillar.

Trent: Fine.  Take the book, but get out of my mom's lap.
Miles: Deal!  See ya!

Movie Review: Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part I

I've been a fan of Harry Potter since my sophomore year of college.  I took a junior adolescent lit class as an elective.  That class was totally up my alley - reading pre-teen books for a grade?  Sign me up!  Since then I have devoured the books and movies.  There's always a bitter sweet feeling when I get to last book of a series, but this story was so fantastic I couldn't be too sad.

The movies have all been good, and Part 1 of the Deathly Hallows was no different.  I thought the acting was great, special effects were great, plot was (duh) great.  Even though I know how the story ends, I can't wait for Part 2!  Just 7 months to go. ;)

Thankful Thursday

Happy Thanksgiving!  In the spirit of the holiday, a list of some of the things I'm thankful for (besides the obvious ones of friends and family):
  • having my family close by - they are such a huge help and blessing to me
  • Trent and Miles being close in age - I know they will be great friends as they grow!
  • public libraries
  • blogging
  • new babies...the ones that are here and the ones on their way!
  • my church
  • Target
  • Brent's new job
  • pedicures
  • movie dates with Dena and Allison
  • my cleaning lady
  • DVR and Netflix
There are a million things I could list, but I don't want to type all day. {grin}

P.S. - Happy birthday, sissy!  32 looks amazing on you.

Trent at Zilker Park

Trent has his first (or many, I'm sure) trip to Zilker Park with Nana and Papa.  They played and played and played.  Nana and Papa got some great shots of him swinging, on the fire truck, on the train and his favorite thing...eating. {grin}

A collage (of course) of his busy, fun day.

 My personal favorite.

Movie Review: Morning Glory

I went and saw Morning Glory  with Allison tonight.  We both went into it with low expectations, just hoping it would be an entertaining 2 hours.  We both loved it!  It was a lot funnier than either of us thought it would be, and the story was really well done.  It's definitely not going to win the Oscar, but I don't usually enjoy those movies. {grin}

Bonus?  Patrick Wilson as the love interest.  When they first showed him I turned to Allison and said 'That's the love interest?  Not impressed.'  But by the end, I was totally won over.  He is adorable!

Double Cousins...

The great thing about the holidays (at least IMO) is time with family.  (Sidebar: we always say what we're thankful for with my mom's family and this weekend when everyone said they were thankful for family, I said 'lame'.  I am such a brat.  Ha!)  This may sound cheesy, but I had a great childhood in which I spent a lot of it with my cousins.  My mom's side of the family is on the big side, my mom is 1 of 7 kids, and there are 12 grandkids.  My dad's side of the family is on the small side, my dad has 1 brother, and there are 3 grandkids.  This past weekend, when we went to Euless, we got to spend time with both sides of the family.

A great thing about time with family is I don't feel the need to impress them - they've seen me at my best and my worst.  So if I choose not to wear make-up or brush my hair and wear jeans and a t-shirt?  Well, you get the below pictures. {grin}

6 of the 12 grandkids on my mom's side (3 sets of siblings)

Later,  Hagan came over to my aunt's house with Connor.  We couldn't pass up the chance to pose.  This age with the boys is too fun.  As evidenced by them not wanting to sit still for a picture!

I promise I'm not trying to be a tease (well, too big of a tease) about our adventures this weekend, but that post is completely dependent on my sister sending the pictures she took.

Did You Know?

  • I finished my big work project on Friday!  No more L.O.N.G. nights (at least for a while).  Hallelujah!
  • I was very upset to go so many days without new posts this past week.
  • We went to Dallas this weekend (Mom, Dad, Patty, me, Miles and Trent) for our first Thanksgiving.  I have TONS of pictures of the adventures the boys had...but they're all on other's hoping my mom and sis sent those pics soon!
  • The boys tried something new this weekend...and it was hysterical watching them.
  • My beloved Aggies BTHO Nebraska last night and have a record of 8-3!!!
  • I am SO excited for a short work-week.  Anyone else?
  • This is Brent's last week of work...EVER.  Well, for his current job anyway.  {grin}
Enough teasers in this post???

Happy. Sad. Blessed.

Work is another one of those weeks right now.  Burning the midnight oil and only seeing my baby in the morning...if that.  Brent Mr. Mom sends me precious updates of their adventures.  Like this one coming home from Nana and Papa's house this evening.

Makes my heart happy to see my baby.
Makes me sad that I can't be there.
Makes me feel blessed that this precious boy is part of me.

Stream of Consciousness

We had a great weekend.  The Aggies AND the Cowboys won.  I can't believe the Aggies are ranked this season.  {Whoop!}  I have dubbed Trent 'The Tornado'.  He walks into a room, destroys it, and leaves.  It is driving me crazy!  He's lucky he's cute.  He's also pulling hair - sometimes for fun, sometimes (usually) when he's angry.  The kicker is that he laughs when I try to discipline him.  Oh boy are we in for some fun as he gets older!  I was happy to read I wasn't the only person already feeling the Christmas vibe.  I can't believe Thanksgiving is next week - but that means it's time for Christmas shopping - EEK!

Thursday, November 11, 2010

  • Trent played outside naked today.  Brent called us white trash.  Is it really that bad?
  • I had Starbucks twice on Tuesday.
  • I like Willow Smith's 'I Whip My Hair'.  At the same time, I think it's stupid that a 9 year-old has a single.
  • I'm ready for Christmas and if I hear one more person say they are putting up their tree early, I might cave.
  • I get sad when I don't have comments on a post, especially if I think it's a really good one.  Ha.
  • Trent has been waking up at 5:15 this week.  I am tired.
  • I've already started listening to Christmas carols.
Anything you want to confess today??

All Boy

Can you see what my son is holding?  Yup, that's a caterpillar.  This guy is such a lover of all things creepy crawly.  If it's moving, he wants to hold it (and maybe eat it).  If it used to be living, he wants to pick it up (and maybe eat it).  I'm working on not being squeamish because I do not like bugs.  I can just imagine what my future holds with this boy.  Maybe I can get him to be in charge of killing crickets and roaches for me??  {grin}

Baby Bump Watch - The Sister Edition

I thought it would be fun to compare Patty's bump from Miles to this baby.  Patty has humored me again and is letting me take pictures at my whim.  She did finally admit that she appreciates having all the pictures I took of her Miles Baby Bump.

I'm Not a Terrible Cook Afterall!

Just wanted to share that it was not my cooking that got us sick.  Unfortunately, we know that because my sister and Janet both got sick.  I felt so terrible that they caught it from our household (especially since Janet kept Trent Thursday night when we were so sick)!  So if anybody wants the Tater Tot Casserole recipe that we'll probably never eat again (even though it was delicious at the time), let me know! {grin}

Down But Not Out

The adult Gurleys are SICK.  Have you ever thrown up at DFW International Airport?  Until today, my answer was no.  Not anymore!  It's been quite a rough day, but I'm so thankful for my in-laws.  They are keeping Trent tonight so the Mr. and I can recover.  I really don't like being sick.  And you know what really stinks?  We think it's from the dinner I made last night.  Wife FAIL.

Busy, Busy, Busy, Busy, There's So Much To Do

I haven't posted many pictures of Trent recently.  At least it feels that way to me.  Are you so curious as to why?  Because this kid is BUSY!  I made a collage (big surprise!) of the most recent pictures I've taken of T.  He's making a mockery of my need for pictures of him, but I wouldn't have it any other way!

Mommy FAIL

Last year, Trent wore a special costume for his first Halloween.  This year, we didn't buy a costume for him.  FAIL.  This year, we didn't take him trick-or-treating.  FAIL.  This year, his daddy didn't dress him up in the hand-me-down costume we did have for his school party (I was traveling for work).  FAIL.  This year, I didn't take a single Halloween picture of him.  FAIL.  This year, we didn't carve pumpkins (not that we ever have before).  FAIL.  Hopefully he'll forgive us because it's obvious this kid is unloved as we neglected all Halloween traditions.   There's always next year!  {grin}

Game Day

I haven't been to an Aggie football game in {gasp} 6 years.  We got some tickets to go see the Ags B.T.H.O. Texas Tech!!!!  I had such a great time cheering my Ags onto victory.  This season (and if we're being honest - many seasons) have been very disappointing, but yesterday's game showed that the Aggies still have some fight in them.  Whoop!

You can take the nerd out of the band, but you can't take the love for THIS band out of THIS nerd!!  Check out that awesome block T!!

Swirl, Sniff, Swish, Swallow

Last night, Brent treated me to a wine tasting/pairing event at Water 2 Wine.  It was a lot of fun, and we had great company.  Our 'instructor' wanted us to just notice the difference when you paired certain foods with a red wine vs. a white wine.  What I noticed is that drinking that much wine in 1 hour is a lot of fun. {grin}  I ended up tasting 10 wines, and we got to take home a bottle of our choice (included in the price of the class).  I'll definitely be looking for other activities there, so if anyone is looking for something fun to do with friends or a special someone, I highly recommend this!

All About Babywearing - Part 1

While pregnant, I thought it would be fun to be a babywearing mama.  Once I realized how much I enjoyed wearing Trent, I got online and read in my baby books ('Baby 411' ROCKS) all about babywearing.  I found out that not only is it convenient for the mama, there are so many benefits for the baby too! When I'm out with Trent and wearing him, I still get questions from other moms about the carrier I'm using or do I like using them or where did I get it or a million other things. So hopefully this isn't boring!!

Here is what I learned (from Wikipedia, askdrsears, etc.):

1. Sling babies cry less. I can definitely attest to this one.  Trent was one of the happiest, most content babies ever.

2. Sling babies learn more.  Sling babies spend more time in a state of 'quiet alert' (since they aren't crying).

3. Sling babies are more organized.

4. Sling babies get humanized earlier.  Babies are closer to people, and can study facial expressions, learn languages faster, and be familiar with body language.

5. Sling babies are smarter.  This is because the baby is more intimately involved in mommy and daddy's world.

6. Babywearing reduces SIDS and 'flat head syndrome'. To paraphrase what I read, babies 'learn' how to regulate their body systems by feelings yours.  And because the baby is not in a carseat, bouncer, stroller, etc. as much there is a reduced chance of your baby having a flat head.

I also learned there are a lot of carriers!  I have a collection of 4, but there are tons of different kinds.  There are pouches*, wraps*, ring slings*, mei tais, hip carriers, front carriers*, and baby backpacks/structured carriers.  Coming soon - all about these carriers!

*These are the ones I have. {grin}

Happy, babywearing mamas!

Movie Review: Life As We Know It

Dena and I saw 'Life As We Know It'.  We have similar taste in romantic comedies - meaning we're super easy to please.  Our criteria?
  • Cute male lead - Josh Duhamel - check
  • Cute female lead - Katherine Heigl - check
  • Cute couple ends up together at the end/Happy ending - check
So we were both happy when we left. {grin}

Baby Fever? I'll Pass...But Thanks For Asking!

My sister is pregnant.  Katie (a bloggy friend whose little girl is 1 day older than Trent) is pregnant.  Rhonda just had Brinley.  But I'm DEAD SERIOUS - no baby fever for this Mama.  I love Trent to pieces but am not ready for him to be a big brother.  I will squeeze Brinley lots (as evidenced below), then come spring, I will squeeze my new niece or nephew lots and enjoy all the new life around me and not in me.  I mean it. {grin}

Trent's 'First' Haircut

So if I'm being real, Trent's first haircut was really just a trim.  It kept his 'wings' under control for awhile, but because we only trimmed the sides, he was getting really close to officially having a mullet.  As much as I didn't want to chop his curls, it was time.  It's such a silly thing to get upset about, and I didn't really get upset, but it does feel like he's not really a baby anymore but a little boy.  But it is definitely exciting to watch him grow and change - I swear every day he's picking up a new word, expression, activity!

Strapping him into the chair did NOT go well.  I ended up sitting in the chair (and let me tell you those chairs are not made for adult bottoms) holding my SCREAMING son.  We're lucky he did not get cut - the lady who cut his hair was super quick, I'm sure she's had practice.  You can really see his mullet in the first pic.

Poor, sad Billy Ray Cyrus...

Whoa!  Who is this big boy?!?!  Still precious as ever though!
He cried so hard and was so upset, the first thing I did when we got home was give him some Cinnamon Toast Crunch.  He totally loves that cereal, and we hardly ever give it to him...but I definitely had some Mommy Guilt.  Ha!

Pumpkin Patch

Saturday we enjoyed a trip to the Elgin Pumpkin Festival.  Now that Trent is getting older, it's getting so fun to go places with him.  Not sure Brent is sold on this stuff yet though {grin}.  I must admit though, I might have had just as much fun playing in Picasa to make my collages.  The festival is this weekend as well if you want to check it out - it really was so neat.  Although I forgot to tell Brent it cost money to enter (he always carries the cash), and we almost couldn't go in!

Not So Guilty Pleasure

Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders: Making the Team 5 started Friday.  Totally watched it for the 5th straight season.  This might be my favorite show.  Not the least bit ashamed about it either. {grin}

Today marks mine and Brent's 6th anniversary.  I got him nothing.  He got me a mani/pedi at a fabulous spa.  He wins...well, I guess I win. {grin}  We celebrated this morning by a family trip to a pumpkin patch.  Are you jealous?  We may not be the most romantic couple...but I sure do love that man.  HAPPY ANNIVERSARY HONEY!!

Recipe Experiment

One thing that has been a challenge for me my entire time as a Mrs. has been consistently cooking dinner.  Brent would happily eat fast food every day, but I do not like that being a staple in our diets.  I might love 'The Biggest Loser', but I do not want to star on it.  I thought it would be fun for all us lovely ladies to help each other out and post a favorite easy recipe or two.  And maybe even do it every once in a while to give each other new ideas or encouragement to keep trying at our goal...even if we have so far failed miserably.  Or am I alone in that failure?  Anyone?  Anyone?  Bueller?  Moving on...

Without further adieu...I present Enchilada Casserole.

1 pound ground beef
1 can cream of chicken
1 can enchilada sauce
Corn tortillas
Grated cheese

1. Brown meat.
2. Mix in cream of chicken and enchilada sauce.
3. Layer tortillas, 1/2 meat/soup mixture, cheese in a casserole dish.  Repeat.
4. Bake in oven at 350 degrees for roughly 15-20 minutes (want cheese melted but cook too long and it gets HARD).

I will mix hominy or corn with it sometimes to add a veggie.

Anyone else want to play?!?!  If so, leave a comment so we can find your recipe.

Tantrums 101

Trent has recently started throwing tantrums when he doesn't get his way. "Oh, I can't have a cookie/ice cream for breakfast?  Let me just show you how that makes me feel, mmm kay?"  For the most part, I can't help but want to laugh.  Twice, though, we've had to take him and put him in his crib because he was SO agitated that we decided he needed some alone time to cool down.  What exactly is he doing?  Well, I'm so glad you asked!

1. Look at mommy in disbelief. "Seriously?  Your going to deny my cute face the item I so desperately NEED?"
2. Start crying.  Allow giant crocodile tears to pour from eyes.
3. Throw myself out of her arms if being held.  Once on the floor, run to the nearest wall and bang head on wall.  OR pull hair - hers, mine, doesn't matter just pull.
4. Continue to wail until distracted by toy/pacifier/milk/snack.
5. Repeat often.

Brent and I hope we are responding appropriately.  Once we have told Trent no, we stick with that answer and don't give in.  We're sticking with 'consistency is key' and hoping for the best.  The mommy handbook doesn't teach that the 'Terrible Twos' start at a minute past 1 year old! {grin}

15 Months!!

Trent turned 15 months last week, but we didn't make it to the doctor until today.  The timing worked out well since we also needed to check on his ear from our ear infection diagnosis last week.  The antibiotic is kicking his butt.  We had a blow-out diarrhea diaper at the doctor that ended up on me in the waiting room.  I had no extra clothes (for either of us).  After I got Trent cleaned up, I heard nurses whispering 'That's the blow-out baby.'  HA!  It does make me wonder which is worse - to let an ear infection heal naturally and just treat the pain or have an upset stomach/nausea/diarrhea/lack of appetite?  Anyhoo...back to our 15 month old baby!  Isn't he precious?

Weight: 22 pounds 4 ounces (10-25%) - I so thought we were going to be 23+ pounds - he's been feeling much heavier lately.  I think the antibiotic is to blame for this as well!
Height: 31 1/4 inches (50%)
Head circumference: 47 cm (25-50% but ALMOST 50%)

What is Trent up to these days?  Everything!
-He's trying to talk and is SO close.  He can say the first syllable of a bunch of words (girl, blower, grill, Babs, Pops, bird, ball).  He can say 'Ma' and 'Da' and can understand us really well, he even follows instructions!
-He has 12 teeth!
-He's signing like crazy!  He knows 20+ signs - it is precious.
-He's eating A LOT (normally) but will shake his head 'no' (this is new) when he doesn't want to try something - which is often.
-He loves to be outside and loves to be in the shed or in his wagon/stroller.  He loves to dance.
-He is such a ham and will do anything if you will clap and cheer for him.  Two of his favorites are when I say 'Ta da' and he puts his hands up in the air or when we ask where his muscles are and he flexes.

We are having a blast with our little guy!

Sing...Sing A Song

Trent constantly makes me laugh without trying.  Some of the things he does are just funny.  One thing that happens every day I just had to share because I think it's funny and because I don't ever want to forget what a joy it is being his mommy.  He likes me to sing when we're in the car.  He goes 'Eh' over and over again until I start.  If he likes the song I'm singing, he's quiet while I sing.  If he doesn't, he says 'EHHHHH!!!' until I switch to a different song.  If he wants me to repeat the song he gives me an 'Eh' after I finish.  I might go through 5 or 10 songs with him vetoing every song until my mind blanks on a song to sing to him.  The same thing happens when he's in the tub and when I'm rocking him before bedtime.  What a little stinker!
