Stream of Consciousness

I got my certificate for my hair from Locks of Love...it was creepy having a ponytail lying on my kitchen counter before I mailed it but oh so worth it! Would it be weird to frame it? {grin}  It finally happened at our house - Trent pooped in the tub.  What can you do but laugh at that?  Miles had just gotten out so thank goodness for small miracles!!  You have one more day to VOTE for the Pepsi challenge 'Refresh Everything' to help little Jordan.  I've been voting every day, and Arms Wide Open is currently in 2nd place (meaning the grant will win the $250K prize).  You can log in under as many email addresses as you have (I even voted under Brent).  So GO VOTE!!!  Trent has his 2nd ear infection, but we are avoiding amoxicillin.  I've 'heard' other Mama Bloggers talk about not using antibiotics for their children, but I'm hesitant to totally go the natural meds route without some research...hmmm...any other mommies out there avoiding antibiotics?  Any advice?

Opposites

So typical of our boys.  Miles is so serious, and Trent is just smiling away.  Does Babs look happy to be a grandma or what??

And They Called It Puppy Love

Trent and I spent Friday night at his godparents' house.  I wonder how long before we have to buy him a dog?

Refresh Everything

It's been a long time since I have blogged about baby Jordan.  To refresh your memory, Jordan's mommy is a family friend from childhood.  She and my sister were BFFs way back in the day.  Don't know if I ever blogged about this before, but my dad even hit Kristen's brother, Brad, in the face with a bowling ball (accidentally of course) causing him to need stitches in elementary school. {grin}  Anyway, back to Jordan.  After going into remission in the spring, her cancer is back.  Her parents have a request (Kristen, I am copying from your blog - hope you don't mind):

Pepsi is sponsoring a grant contest providing $250,000 to the top two vote recipients. Arms Wide Open is a group competing for Dr. Cheung's research lab at MSKCC. Dr. Cheung invented the 3F8 antibody treatment that Jordan underwent this spring. His lab is working to find ways to make the antibodies stronger as well as to bypass the resistance issue (which caused problems for Jordan). You can vote for Arms Wide Open by texting 73774 and entering the code 102653. You can also visit the website HERE and vote online. Voting runs through the end of September, and you can text and vote online one time each day. Arms Wide Open is in fourth place so they only need to move two more spots to win.

Brent and I talk often of how much we cherish our time with Trent and try to live in the now with him.  It's fun to think about him as a 'big boy', but I am savoring every moment of his 'baby-ness' (of course he will always be my baby!).  I cannot even imagine the emotions Jordan's family struggles with daily, and I wish SO hard that no family ever had to.  I read several blogs about children who have previously been ill or babies who have passed away (makes me so sad but just can't help it) and get upset at the 'unfairness' of it all.  Children should always outlive their parents and everyone should live to be 85 and die peacefully in their sleep.  Obviously that isn't reality, and it makes me feel helpless.  When I can do something to help others, I do it.  It makes me feel like I'm making a difference and helping the world be a better place for my children and the Jordans of the world.  So if you have it in you, please vote and pass along this website to everyone you know.  Maybe we can make a difference for even 1 person and wouldn't that be amazing?

Yard Work

Trent LOVES the lawn mower.  I mean LOVES it.  He wants to go out to the shed all the time and visit.  He points to every piece of equipment in there and makes me say what they are.  We spend a lot of time in the shed.  The days Brent mows are the best in our house.  I can't keep Trent inside.  All he wants is for Brent to hold him.  When Brent weed eats or edges, I hold Trent.  What usually happens is Trent tries to get down and begins to pitch a fit.  I take him inside and let him continue his fit and tell him that we can go back outside but Mama has to hold him.  So back outside we go.  We repeat this process every 10 minutes or so until Brent starts to mow.  Then he'll carry Trent with him 2 or 3 times for as long as he can.  Trent will look at me with the most precious grin you've ever seen.  It is the highlight of his day (and probably his week).  Brent gets the best 'thank you' from Trent.  Wouldn't you agree?

What Did You Do Today?

No matter what it was, I doubt it was as cool as my day. {grin} Normally my day consists of staring at a combination of Excel and Word documents preceded and followed by chasing after a toddler to wipe his heiny/nose/face, but today my fabulous company (Official Profession Services Sponsor of the Olympics and Paralympics) hosted an event where I got to meet:

Ralph Green: Paralympian in Alpine skiing
Laura Wilkinson (Gold medal diver - Yes, Dena is wearing her gold medal)
Apolo Ohno (most decorated winter Olympian EVER)

So maybe accounting isn't all that bad?!?!

Book Review: The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo

Synopsis: Mikael Blomkvist, a once-respected financial journalist, watches his professional life rapidly crumble around him. Prospects appear bleak until an unexpected (and unsettling) offer to resurrect his name is extended by an old-school titan of Swedish industry. The catch--and there's always a catch--is that Blomkvist must first spend a year researching a mysterious disappearance that has remained unsolved for nearly four decades. With few other options, he accepts and enlists the help of investigator Lisbeth Salander, a misunderstood genius with a cache of authority issues.

Review: This book was awesome!  I knew nothing about the book before I started, so it took me a while to figure out how the characters fit together, but I think that made the book more intriguing.  There were lots of surprises and the plot was very unique.  I can't wait to read the remaining 2 books in the trilogy!!

Camo Anyone?

Last weekend, we went to Trace's 5th birthday party. It was camo themed - EVERYONE wore camo. It was precious. We had to make a run to Academy the day of to buy camo for Trent and me. I find it highly hilarious that we didn't take a picture at the wedding where we are dressed in our nicest, but we got a few pictures in camo!!

Family picture - can you find us in all that camo?
Trent's first Gator ride - he LOVED it!!
Maybe one day, Trace's mama will post pictures from the party? (Hint, hint)

Liquid Gold

I got a call from the Austin Milk Bank last week. It was a sort of final call (for now) since I'm done pumping for Trent. I truly enjoyed donating milk for premature and sick babies and felt so blessed to have such an abundant supply that I was able to donate. I hate hearing stories from friends of the struggles they had with supply or having a baby who doesn't latch easily. We all know I had my own issues after Trent arrived but nursing was never a problem, and for that, I feel so blessed. Nursing was one of my favorite parts of the newborn/baby phase! I found out that I donated 988 ounces to the Milk Bank. That's EIGHT GALLONS people. Holy smokes. I had no idea I donated that much. I'm excited at the thought of being able to donate again in the future and think I've set a goal for the next baby - I'm going for 1,000 ounces!! {grin}

And Then There Were 8...

Brent's brother got married Saturday, so we added an 8th Gurley to our family. I had fun with another Picasa collage, I might be obsessed.

Welcome to the family, Crystal!
Somehow we managed to not take a family picture, but I did get a cute one of my boys!

THE Pretty Big, Life-Changing Event

Man, A LOT of people thought I was preggers after my little tease about a life-changing event. I am definitely NOT preggers (although someone I love dearly is...but I can't tell you about that yet), but I am defnitely a tease! Our big, life-changing event was Trent's first haircut!!! Brent and I went back-and-forth about cutting Trent's hair. I didn't want to risk losing his curls, but he had some wings on the sides. So we finally decided to take him and get his wings trimmed. Our friend, Heather, works at a posh salon in south ATX and agreed to give Trent a trim but NOT a mullet! Trent did a great job, and I didn't shed any tears. {grin} Thanks to Heather for the haircut and my FMIL (fabulous mother-in-law) for the picture-taking.

Pre-haircut - wings in effect

My first Picasa collage of Heather's diligent work.
