Noom Check-in: 9 Months!

 I have been using Noom for just over 9 months and figured it was time for another check-in. My last update was in June, and honestly, not much has changed - for good and bad! So let me explain what I mean by that. {grin}

The Good:
  • I am still consistently using the app every day and earning my coins. I hit the highest level 'Noom Wizard' at the end of October ha. Now I focus on earning my coins for getting 'Treat Days'.
  • Working out is consistent. This isn't new, but I always want to acknowledge it given I went so long without consistently working out. There were times this felt so insurmountable and now it's something I do almost every day.
  • I'm finding it easier to make better food choices and learning how to live a more balanced life. Going out to eat, enjoying a treat day and getting back on track, choosing when to splurge vs. always splurging, ha.
  • A scale victory I'm very excited about - I'm back in my pre-pregnancy jeans from Paige!
The Bad:
  • Now this bad could also be a good, and I'm trying to view it as so: I've basically been in a plateau since the summer...UGH. The upside of this is I've maintained about 20 pounds of weight loss {15-20 depending on the week ha}, but given I'd like to lose another 10...it's a bit frustrating.
  • I could still use some work on more greens and less oranges...processed food man.
Bottom line - Noom is working for me, and I plan to continue using it! I have my treat days set through December and am excited to tackle the last of my weight loss in the New Year.

I think you can really see the weight loss in my face here.
Doesn't hurt that I'm standing next to my VERY pregnant sister, ha.

Broadway Across America: The Book of Mormon

Another fun night out with my ladies for another great musical! We went last night with a group of 6 ladies and had a great night out! I love access to all these musicals that I wouldn't normally and love that the caliber is so top notch!

Plot: The story follows 2 missionaries of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints as they attempt to preach the faith to the inhabitants of a remote Ugandan village.

Review
: This poster is not wrong. This was HYSTERICAL. We were all laughing so hard - like couldn't catch our breath, snorting, just dying. If you are easily offended, this isn't the play for you, but we all LOVED it. It is funny, the music is great, the plot was fun...just overall AMAZING! I cannot say enough good things about it. A+++++

Added bonus that my co-worker Hannah came with us!

Monthly Musings: Thanksgiving Prep

So exciting to be talking about Thanksgiving!

1.What are your Thanksgiving plans?

Last year was the anomaly in the 19 years of our marriage where we DIDN'T do our normal routine - when we went to Hawaii!

Not a bad Thanksgiving!

Our typical plans include being with Brent's family on Thanksgiving day and with my family the Saturday after.

Thanksgiving 2021 in Brent's parents' backyard

We also celebrate my sister's birthday and Dad's birthday - they are always around Thanksgiving.

My dad lost his dad when my dad was 22 and his dad was 62 -
it is never lost on me every year how much time my dad didn't have with his.

2. Favorite Thanksgiving dish.

I don't care AT ALL about the meal at Thanksgiving. I am there for dessert. Which is basically a fundamental of my whole life. I love the chocolate pie my mother-in-law makes, and I'm hoping we can make a pumpkin roll again this year.

I will eat this over turkey, dressing, etc. ANY DAY.

The main meal is Brent's favorite meal of the whole year. He loves everything his family serves. It cracks me up how different we are - I don't think he even eats the dessert?

3. Best food prep tips?

Share the load! I've never cooked a full Thanksgiving meal - we always split up the responsibilities so everyone shares in the preparation.

4. Favorite Thanksgiving traditions?

We don't really have any traditions minus where we are for each day, and I love that!

I've also gone the last few years to a Christmas bazaar with Kristen and Susannah the Friday before Thanksgiving, and that is quickly becoming a favorite tradition.

5. Turkey? Ham? Other? Both?

I enjoy both, and we have both at Brent's parents' house. With my family, the menu isn't super consistent. Sometimes it turkey or ham, sometimes it BBQ or chicken, ha.

6. Apple pie? Pumpkin pie?

If I have to pick, I'm choosing apple pie, but see my dessert picture above. {grin}

7. Football or family movie?

We watch football! The Dallas Cowboys play on Thanksgiving Day and the Texas A&M Aggies play on Saturday.

8. Stuffing or dressing?

I didn't eat this EVER until I was an adult, and I only eat Brent's mom's, and it's 'dressing'. Not my favorite food, but I like it pretty good. It is Brent's favorite recipe on earth.

9. Turkey trot or Thanksgiving parade?

AmpedUp - where I workout and teach Body Pump - has a 'Huff 'n Puff Before You Stuff' workout class on Thanksgiving morning, and I really love going to that. It's a variety of jazzercise and all the other types of classes offered, and it's about 90 minutes and sets the day up for FEASTING haha. I've done a few turkey trots in the past, but I have learned I really don't like to run anymore, so I don't see that happening anytime soon.

10. Have you ever done a Friendsgiving?

We haven't! A few years ago we did go away with friends before Thanksgiving {in 2020 when our 40th birthday trip to Costa Rica got canceled}, and that was a blast!

It wasn't Costa Rica, but we sure had fun!

Book Club Does Maggiano's

 If you don't know this about me, then you haven't been reading my blog for very long, but I LOVE a good tradition. Our book club has been going strong for 12 years and almost since the beginning we have done an annual holiday gift exchange. At some point along the way, we added going to Maggiano's for dinner as part of the experience. We don't go to Maggiano's every year - and we didn't last year - but everyone was super sad after last year, so we 100% knew we needed to go this year.

Coordinating schedules with 9 wives/mothers is no easy tasks, so our 'holiday' dinner was last week ha. It's a super fun kickoff to all things holiday! We ended up with 2 ladies out due to illness, but the other 7 of us had a blast.

There's a lot of years of friendship here!
Rhonda ~ Susannah ~ Jennifer ~ Allena ~ Tricia ~ Desiree ~ Karin

I always get lasagna with a take home meal of 4-cheese ravioli. As always, it was DELICIOUS.

Check out that dessert! Pumpkin pecan cheesecake!
And a very dark Colorado bulldog as my dessert drink of choice.

We are the worst {or possibly the best?} at a gift exchange and very little stealing happens because everything we open is so fun. I ended up with coasters that look like old-timey library checkout cards and a bag that says 'I'm with the banned' - 100% perfect for me! I still use the cake stand I got in our first gift exchange!

We had a great time, and I don't think we'll ever miss again unless a catastrophe happens - we talked briefly about going to another restaurant and we all agreed we have to stick with what we love - if it ain't broke, don't fix it! {grin}

Halloween 2023 Recap

We had a great Halloween! Gosh, I love this time of year SO MUCH. It's about time for crazy happy, hyper Allena to show her face ha.

We got to do a few fun events leading up to Halloween - the first being a Girl Scouts birthday party for the founder of Girl Scouts, Juliette Gordon Low. It was at our Girl Scout house, and the girls had fun! The troop that organized it did a great job putting it together with games, crafts, snacks, lots of things for the girls to do!

Spoon race and recycled costumes for the win!

We also celebrated some neighbor/friends' birthdays - Trey turned 10 and Tanner turned 7.

Tanner and Paige - Friends since birth!
[I have pictures of them as little babies, can't believe they are so big!]

One of our besties as Napoleon Dynamite - she nailed it!

A cold front blew in Sunday afternoon so trick or treating was COLD for us Texans! Paige was actually the one to call it a night which is shocking because that girl LOVES candy.

The day of Halloween Drew BEGGED me to take her to get a new costume. Her original costume was a Dallas Cowboys football player, and she just wasn't feeling it. I told her she would owe me a lot of chores, but we stopped at a Spirit Halloween on the way home from school and got her a panda costume. KIDS!

A suburban mom, a vampire queen, and a panda

We trick or treated with our neighborhood crew, love our friends!

5/6 RBC babies {Trent was with his friends, he's so old!}

Speaking of Trent, here's the picture he sent me of his costume. Sigh.

I love my big guy being with his friends and having fun,
but it is a little sad to have them spread their wings!

Organizing their haul

Trent with his friends - the inflatables were funny but apparently annoying, ha.

And that's a wrap on Halloween - SQUEEEEEEEE!

October 2023 Book Review

Happy Halloween Hangover! I hope you had a great time celebrating yesterday. It was a cold one in Texas, but we persevered and got lots of candy!

I read 10 books this month - a good mix of fiction and nonfiction, but my diversity was pretty terrible {as it has been the last few months}. It also wasn't a great month for awesome reads - I only had 1 5-star review!

Me by Elton John - I loved this memoir! Taron Egerton was the narrator, and he did a fantastic job {he played Elton John in Rocketman, so I love the connection back to Elton's biopic}. The book was very thorough about Elton's life but also very funny and insightful. My only complaint was I wish we'd had some music clips when certain songs were discussed, ha.

Mrs. Nash's Ashes by Sarah Adler - I had seen this one on Goodreads for a while and thought it sounded cute, and while I liked it overall, I felt 'meh' about a lot of it. It was fine. This follows 2 timelines - in the present, Millie is taking her elderly friend's ashes to her first love, and in the past, we see Mrs. Nash falling for her first love. This was largely a grumpy/sunshine trope, which I normally enjoy, but the plot was just a bit too cheesy for me.

Mrs. Porter's Calling by AJ Pearce - This is the 3rd book in a series about a wartime magazine writer, Emmy Lake, and each book just keeps getting better. It's such a heartfelt series with characters I genuinely care about. This book specifically was about their magazine switching owners and the new owner basically being an idiot, ha. It was such a good book and focused a lot on love, loss, and found families. I can't wait for more!

A Restless Truth by Freya Marske - This was the 2nd book in a magical trilogy, and it was not great compared to the 1st book. I LOVED A Marvellous Light, but I found this one largely boring. The end picked up, and I am relatively excited to finish the trilogy {the 3rd book comes out in November}, but I wish this one had been as good as the first.

The Secret Bridesmaid by Katy Birchall - I really loved The Wedding Season by this author and almost enjoyed this one as much. This author just really knows how to write a story with characters I care about and plots that are fun but also make an impact. Sophie is basically a wedding planner and this story follows her helping plan a society wedding for a bride who doesn't want any help. The hang-up for me on LOVING this book was that Sophie would be a 'secret' bridesmaid to do the wedding planning - and I just thought that was bizarre - why wouldn't you just be open that you have a wedding planner? There was a lot of backstory and explanations about it trying to make it feel plausible, but it lost it for me a little.

Will They or Won't They by Ava Wilder - Another 2nd read by an author whose first book and I loved, and this was another winner! Probably my second favorite read of the month. This story follows co-stars who went from lovers to enemies who are now having to act together again. It was a lot of fun, and I thought the author did a great job of showing the actors growth, and it also had good mental health representation.

Cultish by Amanda Montell - This was our BFBC selection of the month, and while I found it mostly interesting...it was too long and tedious at times. It really studied the way language is used to connect people - for good {common language you might use in group fitness} or bad {Jim Jones, Heaven's Gate, Scientology}. Parts of it were really fascinating - I really enjoyed reading about the Christian buzz words that are prevalent through so much of our everyday lives, and I'm always down for cult stories, but this one felt like a long article gone wrong.

The Empire of Gold by S.A. Chakraborty - I read The City of Brass and The Kingdom of Copper over the last couple of years, and it is a super intricate fantasy trilogy. I don't even know how I would describe it. I'm really glad I finished the trilogy, and think the author did a fantastic job wrapping everything up, but this was LONG. I listened to this, and it was over 28 hours. By the end, I was listening to it at 2.5x speed! Glad I read it, glad it's over. {grin}

A Gentleman in Moscow by Amor Towles - This was on my oldest books TBR that I wanted to read or delete from my Goodreads list, and was book 8/10 for me to get to this year, yay. HOWEVER, this was beyond boring. Brent said he's never seen me take so long to get through a book, and he might be right! He actually bought this one a few years ago to read on a plane and thought the same thing and gave it up. Well, I stuck with it but zzzzzzzzz. It follows an aristocrat in Russia in the 1920s who is under house arrest in a hotel - it sounded like a really fun premise, but I can't recommend this one!

The Woman in Me by Britney Spears - Oh Britney. I have a fascination with her and have since she came onto the music scene. We're about the same age, and I can admit now that I was jealous of her - she was beautiful, had a rocking body, was rich and famous...but her story is so so awfully sad. Just about every adult in her life used, abused, and failed her. It's such a tragedy to see how she has turned out - I 100% think she is mentally ill, and I think her fame is to blame for it. With all that said, this is not a well-written book. It's very entertaining {although, again, so sad} and because of that, I enjoyed it. But she skims over large parts of her story - the entirety of her relationship with Justin Timberlake is like 3 minutes. So I feel like it could have actually been longer {the audiobook is 5.5 hours - that is REALLY short}. I wonder if it's short because she doesn't remember? Either way, it's an entertaining listen but don't expect great literature.

And that finishes my month! My average for the month was a 3.55 which I guess is pretty consistent with my year as my overall average is 3.66. A few good ones but more 'meh' than I'd like! Here's hoping November is great!
