Randoms for Your Tuesday

First up, this guy has a birthday today! Happy 41st Brent!
I'll share later this week how we celebrated and hopefully made him feel special!

You HAVE TO go check out @lubalin_vibe_emporium on Instagram.
He has made these videos called Internet Dramas that are the funniest.
I think I have watched them easily 10 times each and just laugh SO HARD.

I have 3 different book club meetings coming up soon,
not counting my original in-person friend book club. I love books!
2 are for work {#nerdalert} and 1 is my Blog Friend Book Club.

Drew has gotten into graphic novels.
We had to have the librarian help us last week
because I do not know anything about graphic novels!
She really likes the Guts series and read When Stars are Scattered {and said she loved it but it made her cry, she is definitely my daughter!}. Any recommendations for her?

This made me laugh! Happy Tuesday!

Ramblings

I have so many random things to blog about - none are enough to blog about individually, but there are a lot of thoughts running around in my head!

1) I am finally making progress on weaning Paige! I have really made zero effort to this point because I felt like I needed Brent to step in and do all her naps and bedtimes until we got her to break the nursing/sleep association because I thought she was going to lose her mind if I tried to put her to sleep without nursing. I decided to just try this weekend and told her my milk was gone for naps but she could still have it at bedtime. She listened and seemed to understand, so we read books, and she got in my lap and immediately said 'Milk'. I reminded her that it was gone until bedtime, and she fussed for maybe 15 seconds and THEN PUT HER THUMB IN HER MOUTH AND LET ME SING! Couldn't have gone better! We've now had 2 naps without nursing, a smidge of fussing, but no nursing!!!!!!! Obviously we have to tackle bedtime still but baby steps and we are making progress!!!!

2) Speaking of Paige, I had her end-of-year Parent-Teacher Conference, and I talked to her teacher about when Paige will transition next year. She's been in her current class since 14 months, and Paige will move up around 3 to the Children's House environment. Her teacher told me the plan is for her to move in the fall to Trent's old teacher {who we love} and said 'Basically any teacher who gets her will be getting a gift-wrapped present.' SWOON. And I feel like after all the trouble Trent caused his old teacher, I'm thankful we can end our career at CMS with her having Paige, HA!

3) Meeting Erika on Friday! Guys! We had so much fun! I got teased a little bit about meeting someone off the internet, but it was totally worth all the teasing. {grin} I got us coffee from a local coffee shop and we just sat and talked about...amongst other things...you guessed it...BOOKS!

4) Trent is going to cause me to have a nervous breakdown. He's not even 10, and the sass and back-talking I'm getting from that kid is going to drive me CRAZY. I sent him to bed last night at 7:30 and when he said he wasn't tired I told him he could close his eyes and think about all the ways that he could be nice to me. His response? 'Why would I want to do that?' UGGGGHHHHH.

I'm terrible at ending blog posts. So how about a cute picture of my girls from Paige's end of year party at school?? {And yes, Paige's pants - which aren't hers - are inside out. Toddlers are FUN!}

Life Updates

A lot has been going on lately that I wanted to blog about - none of it quite enough to do individual posts, so this'll be a hodge podge assortment of stuff. {grin}

Paige is sleeping in her crib! She's unswaddled and sleeping in a sleep sack! She's napping at least 50% of the time for more than an hour! This is totally the point in motherhood where I stop stressing a lot. I hate swaddling, I had the short baby sleep cycles, I hate teaching a baby to work through that, I hate when everyone isn't where they're 'supposed to be'. I am just on cloud 9 for where we are! I will miss snuggling with her during her naps, but I am definitely much more productive, ha. I also crave structure and knowing my babies' personalities in the newborn days, and I feel like that's totally where we are. Everyone is sleeping where they are supposed to, Paige is SO predictable now {hallelujah!}, it's just the beginning of the really good stuff. Now if we could just get her sleeping through the night...

I am feeling really good. This seems to be where my postpartum lets up. With Trent, I stopped taking Zoloft right around 6 months PP. With Drew, I noticed the anxiety was pretty much gone by the time I went back to work {at 5 months PP}. Sleep is definitely one of my triggers and once the baby is going to bed earlier, is sleeping in their crib, etc. I can just breathe. I don't think I'm quite ready to reduce the Zoloft yet, but it's so exciting to know it's probably not too far off.

I go back to work in 4 weeks. I am not necessarily ready to go back, but given I must work, I can't complain over 24 weeks off at full pay. We hired a nanny for the 3rd summer in a row, and I think this one {her name is Morgan} will be amazing. It's going to be such a different experience going back to work in my HR role compared to when I was in Audit. I will still see the kids so much during the day, and being able to continue to nurse Paige and not have to pump will be so nice.

I took the kids to my in-laws' apartment. They sold their house and are building a new one literally 7 minutes from us, but they're living in an apartment until it is ready. The big 2 went swimming and had a blast. Although it seems like they forgot a lot of what they learned at swim lessons last summer. Good thing we got them enrolled this summer!

Something really cool is happening Thursday...but I'm not going to say what it is just yet. Come back Friday to see!

Randoms

  • We registered Trent and Drew for swim lessons through our community rec center. I'm excited to build on what they learned last year...but am also glad to not be repeating our first day from last year!
  • Guess who started at Stitch Fix? This lady!!
  • And guess who is sleeping AND napping in their crib? NOT this lady, ha. Post to come soon about this once we've really mastered it...
  • I have 2 books downloaded from the library and NEITHER one of them is a Nora Roberts book. #proud
  • This time last year we had our first OB appointment for Smoochie. So glad we have Smoochie on the outside now!
  • I am using my passport for identification at Stitch Fix. Sad that it is 9 years old and has 1 stamp... We have chosen to have kids instead of travel. SOMEDAY we'll travel!
  • The kids LOVE the song Shut Up and Dance with Me and also the Minecraft parody Shut Up and Mine with Me. Can you picture Drew and me {with Paige in the Ergo} walking around the grocery store singing 'These diamonds are my destiny. Whoa oh, shut up and mine with me.' over and over. Do you think the other patrons enjoyed it?
  • I saw this quote and thought YES! 'Picking five favorite books is like picking the five body parts you'd most like not to lose.'  -Neil Gaiman
  • We need new pans - ours are super old {think wedding gift} and probably toxic given I was clueless about that stuff when we got married. Anyone have a good suggestion for pots and pans that won't break the bank {I so wish I could buy all Le Creuset} but good quality and non-toxic?
  • Did I mention that all 3 kids will be at our school next year? We got a scholarship for Trent, so we can keep all of them there! I am so excited Trent gets to finish his Montessori cycle but also excited for 1 drop-off and pick-up! Paige starts in the Nido {Italian for 'nest'} class in the fall, and it is the cutest room. Ever.
That was a lot of randomness, huh? {grin}

Randoms

  • I'm going to confess right up front this is a bit of a cop-out post. I have been working on my DITL post for this quarter and have yet to finish it. They are so fun but take so much time!
  • I finished my juice cleanse! I thought it was pretty good. Some of the juices were hard to swallow but some were amazing. Just glad it's over although if it were cheaper I think I would so do it once a month.
  • My sister got back her blood work on getting testing for MTHFR. She's got 2 copies of the A1298C mutation. Her doctor had no idea what it was when she asked to be tested for it and didn't know what the results meant. #givemeanhonorarymedicaldegree
  • Is anyone else about to die of excitement over the Gilmore Girls reunion movies on Netflix? I feel like I see stuff about it online almost every day and am SO pumped.
  • Trent and I started the 4th Harry Potter book. I dreamed for years about being able to read those books to my kids. He is eating it up, and so I am.
  • Are there ANY good movies in theaters right now? Ugh.
  • Our forecast calls for a lot of rain and thunderstorms. So much fun for a mom of a kid {Drew} petrified of thunder.
  • Guess who's getting back in the gym this week?!?! Woot, woot! I have a 5K in 4 weeks, eek!
  • These 2...ironically I took this picture on National Siblings Day {when I didn't even know it was National Siblings Day}.

  • I watched the Golden Globes last night but honestly didn't feel like doing anything for the fashion. I started saving pictures and just felt meh about the whole thing. It's a TON of work. So unless I get a lot of comments begging me to do it...
  • Allison and I saw Carol yesterday. Review to come after a few more Oscar films.
  • Speaking of the Oscars, nominations come out Thursday so hopefully Allison and I haven't made any missteps with what we've seen so far.
  • It is so cold today! I was scrambling to find enough warm stuff for the kiddos for school.
  • Drew is no longer sleeping in her crib, and we're all a little tired. For the most part, it isn't hard to get her to stay in her bed {wherever it may be that night - she does NOT want to sleep in her converted crib}. But if she wakes up at any point in the middle of the night, she tries to get into bed with Trent. Then he comes to our room to complain, then she starts crying because T left her. Then I get up to put her back in her bed. Lather, rinse, repeat. We're trying to be consistent - but this phase is no fun for sure.
Sleeping in the guest room on the bathroom floor.
I don't care where she sleeps as long as it's not my room or Trent's, but...
this is a little too close to how I'm sure I looked on my 21st birthday!

  • I already bought Brent's birthday present...for his birthday in May. I am so excited and proud!
  • We celebrated our last Christmas Saturday - this was with my aunts, uncles, and cousins on my mom's side. She is 1 of 7 kids...so it's a big party!
Probably our best picture of first cousins, spouses, kids.
Trent refused to be in the picture, and Drew is in a onesie. #shockers

  • Have I mentioned Brent and I booked a trip for February? So excited!
  • What has been going on in your neck of the woods?

You'd Be Surprised How Hard It Can Be to Get Your Mail in the 'Burbs

This is one of those stories that is ridiculous. For the past 2 months, I have looked around me and wondered how this level of stupidity was possible...and yet more stupidity kept happening. So while this is a topic that you will probably find a little silly to be blogging about, you might also agree with me that it's pretty ludicrous.

The night we closed on our house, the agent at the title company told us to take our title paperwork to the post office, and they would be able to give us keys to our box based on those documents. I'd already forwarded our mail, so this SEEMED easy. Today...yes, today...almost 2 months after we moved in, we got keys.

The day we moved in, I went to the post office after I got the kids from school. After waiting in line for 20 minutes and being passed around a couple of times, I was told there wasn't currently a box or keys for us because the city was growing too fast for the postal service to keep up. They also couldn't tell me when they'd have keys for me, so I needed to put a hold on our mail and keep coming back to the post office to check for keys and to collect our mail. That sounded super fun after watching my children run around playing chase for the last 20 minutes of our visit.

Over the next month, no one could tell me anything about our keys. When should we get them? I don't know. What should I do? Keep coming back. But then we stopped getting mail at the post office. So over an especially enjoyable 75 minutes at the post office 2 weeks ago, 40 of which was spent standing with a manager while she flipped through books of addresses, disappeared to the back, came back to flip through more books, I learned that our mail was being delivered somewhere but she couldn't say where because she couldn't find our address in any of her books. We put another hold on our mail {because the first one had been so effective} to get our mail back to the post office, and she was going to take to the 'growth coordinator' and find out where our mail was. She promised to call me with information. I'm still waiting for that call.

Last week, however, I was driving home and a mail carrier was delivering mail to where I figured our box would be. I pulled over, hopped out of the car, told him our story, and asked if he could see if our address was in the boxes he was filling. And what do you know - IT WAS!!!!!!!!!!! I was able to take 6 weeks' worth of mail home with me, and I also took pictures of the box with our name and address clearly displayed as evidence to show the post office.

Today at the post office when Brent got our keys, the manager he talked to {a different one than I 'worked' with} told him our keys had been there all along, and he didn't know why no one else could find them.

It probably shouldn't be this exciting, but man, I'm ecstatic to have mail keys!

Weekend Update

I can't believe the weekend is over! We had such an uneventful but fun weekend.

Friday, both kids were crying/upset the whole way home from school {Trent had a bad day, and Drew was just being a 2 year-old}, so I decided we needed some TLC from my parents. We spent 2 hours over there, stayed outside the whole time, and just were loved on...which we all 3 needed. [Sidebar: It was also Miles' birthday {how do I have a 6 year-old nephew?}, but we aren't celebrating until Spring Break.] After we left my parents, we stopped at Target to buy new sheets. Brent and I only have 1 set that we were trying to make last until the move because we want new bedding...but it had a rip that kept growing, so we had to buy some. From a recommendation on IG, I wanted to try the Threshold brand. Trent was adamant about the set we needed to buy, so of course I had to buy the ones he picked!

And guess what?! The pattern might be crazy for us, but the sheets are so comfortable!

Saturday we went to the house with my parents and sister's family. Every time I go out there, I love it more. The master bath is 90% done, but we couldn't walk on it. I could have stared at it all day. Then we went to play at Patty's. The kids were once again outside for hours, and it was great. I only got 1 picture of Mayer being...Mayer. In the neighbors' garage on their riding mower. #goofy

Sunday, Brent and I went back to the house to measure some rooms for rugs and to Home Depot to check out what they had {nothing}. We realized today we need to get rugs bought soon because they're going under a lot of furniture. So I spent hours looking online at rugs. And then at bedding. And then at playroom ideas. I ended up in a spiral of decorating ideas that overwhelmed me, reminding me how terrible I am at decorating. But! But! But! We could walk on the bathroom floor, and I got a few pictures of the bathroom.

Master shower

Closet with tile {and we decided it needs a rug, aaaahhhh!!!}

Looking out from the closet

The kids have done fantastic today with the time change, and for the first time maybe ever Trent didn't wake up early today, so maybe {please please please} we won't all want to pass out this week. And maybe we can find some bedding and rugs without me having a nervous breakdown about my lack of decorating skills!

Randoms...from Training

I'm paying really close attention to a training I'm in right now. We're supposed to be doing an exercise from materials that I didn't even download. Um...yeah. So since I have been crickets this week, I thought it'd be time to do a random update of sorts!

  • My bookworm self is in heaven! Outlander #8! I am flying through it, and it is SO intense!

  • Our training facility has a REAL Starbucks in it - and we don't pay for anything while on campus. And I'm eating jelly beans for breakfast.
  • Somebody turns FIVE on Sunday. How is that possible? We're not having a full-blown party {just family and Godparents} and going camping. So excited!
  • This is what I have in my hotel room? {grin}
  • Drew had a party on Tuesday night on-and-off until 2:00 AM and then I got up at 4:00 to drive to training. Needless to say, I think I have a reason for my lack of attention!
  • I'm hosting a giveaway with Ruthie Hart. Go enroll!!
What's random with you?

Finish This

I've seen this floating around for awhile but am finally going to try it. {Lacking in blog material maybe? Still so insanely busy with work I kind of want to cry?}

My favorite makeup item is...mascara. I think it makes the most impact in my makeup regimen and would pick it to wear over everything else.

The best book I ever read was...Gone with the Wind. This has been at the top of my favorites list for over 15 years.

My favorite TV show is...Law and Order: SVU. It's the one show Brent and I watch together. I've been trying to get him to watch something else with me but no dice so far. To be fair, that would imply I have time in the evenings for a TV show I could actually watch without accounting spreadsheets open on my lap. #FML

The most spontaneous thing I've ever done...ummm....crickets...

I prefer dogs over cats because...cats are spiteful. A dog wants you to love them and loves you back. A cat just expects you to feed them and if you don't, your bed will be peed on.

I met my husband...in high school. This month is SEVENTEEN years that we've been together. Over half my life. NUTS!

Lying {A Story}

Brent every once in a while brings up this random story from high school where I supposedly lied/cheated on a quiz. He said something to Trent about lying this weekend and said {jokingly} 'Why don't you ask Mommy about lying?' And I knew EXACTLY what story he was referencing. Then, this morning, the teacher from that class passed away. And it got me thinking even more about that story.

And after SIXTEEN years of him swearing I was a cheater and SIXTEEN years of me saying I wasn't {and okay maybe if I was a little bit it was his fault}, I decided to bring this to a vote.

Allena and Brent circa 1998...doesn't she look so innocent?
And would NEVER cheat?

Brent and I began dating our junior year of high school. Our high school was pretty big and our class graduated 500 students {501 to be exact as I, Class President, have the list from planning our 10 year reunion a few years back}. Brent and I only ever had 1 class together in all of high school, and it was during our senior year after we'd been dating for almost a year. It was a Government/Economics class taught by Mr. Boucher {RIP}.

Mr. Boucher was a pretty unconventional teacher. We had lively debates and a pretty unstructured class schedule. There was 1 random table in the middle of the classroom, and it was at this table that Brent and I sat. And mostly passed my notebook back and forth {where I was supposed to be taking class notes} writing silly high school things to each other. {And I still have this notebook and can attest that yes, high schoolers are that dumb.}

Anyway, we were studying economics at one point and going over supply-and-demand. We had a quiz over it. {Which chart represents when the demand for peanut better is high but the supply is low} I'm rocking away at my quiz when I hear Brent mutter under his breath {Remember, we're at the same table} 'This can't be right.'

Well, if it were you, what would you have done when you heard that statement? You'd look at his quiz to see what he was talking about. And I notice his answers go A, B, C, D, E, F...etc. And I look back at my quiz...and notice mine don't go in that order. So I start looking at my questions again and realize I've got some mixed up, and Brent is indeed correct.

I change my answers and we both get a 100.

Brent has always said that my actions were cheating. I counter that he called my attention to his paper which made me question my own paper and change my answer. I also counter that I wasn't done yet and the further I got into the quiz, I would have realized I had some wrong.

For SIXTEEN YEARS he has harassed me about this quiz.

Now you be the judge. Would you say I cheated?

Randoms...Bullet-Point Style

  • I don't blog often about my contributing at Austin Moms Blog, but I'm still doing that gig. And I'm hosting a giveaway through AMB {which runs until 3/11} for a free Young Living Essential Oil. All you have to do is go comment on mine and Jenna's oil blog. You know you wanna!
  • I went to the rodeo last night and saw Thompson Square. I didn't know much of their stuff, but they were awesome. More awesome though? Pizza on a stick.
  • This. Just this.

  • Oh and then this too.

Rocky Start to a Great Ending...What a Day! {Randoms}

Today started off as one of those days that makes you want to go home and get back under the covers.
  • I stayed up too late working {so that's technically how today started which is always fun}. And the cleaning lady came today so I was trying to pick up last minute stuff and each kid was doing his/her darnedest to prevent me from finishing that task.
  • Because of the above, I was late heading to work. There was an accident on the highway. And they are filming a TV show near my client {Revolution} so there was nowhere to park.
  • I met a friend for lunch and that parking was nuts too. What was going on today in Austin?
  • Trent had another rough day at school. {At least it was better than Tuesday when BOTH kids got in trouble for biting. #awesome}
  • The following happened to Trent today while playing with Daddy. [sad face]

  •  And Sister had to steal Brother's 'ice' {her teething ring} because IT'S HERS!!!!

I ended the day with an awesome pedicure, Daddy and Trent watched an extra movie together, and Drew got her teething ring, so everyone ended up happy in the long run! But man am I glad tomorrow is Friday!

Book Worm Rant

I think I've mentioned a time or two that I love books. Well, I recently saw the below meme and was offended by it.

Let me explain why...

Is this picture trying to say that 'real' books are better than e-books? That's the way this picture comes off to me, and I just think that's dumb.

Shouldn't we promote reading in whatever form? If a kid loves to read magazines, let's encourage it! {Trent loves his High 5 magazine he's been getting for years from Babs and Pops.} If a teen only wants to read on her e-reader, shouldn't we be happy she wants to read? If a young adult refuses to read it if they can't physically turn a page, let's celebrate that too.

I love books and reading in all forms and fashions. Hardback, paperback, old, new, electronic, even audio {which is totally cheating, ha}.

I have a public library card and can't wait to get one for Trent on his next birthday. I love to go browse the stacks and read the flaps of books that catch my eye. I love the feel of peace inside a library. I love having a pile of books on my nightstand {and inside my nightstand...and in our office}.

I also love my Kindle. Through my public library card, I have access to the Central Texas database. I love how easy it is for me to instantly download FREE books and books for T too. Or how quickly I can buy a book from Amazon when I just HAVE to have the next book in a series NOW. I love to snuggle in my bed with the lights off, my fans {yes plural} whirring in the background with the glow of my Kindle screen being the only light in the room. I also love that e-books don't create waste like a 'real' book does. And I love that I don't feel guilty about finding space for a 'keeper' in my already cramped bookshelf - I can keep ALL.THE.BOOKS when they are electronic!

So that picture above offends me. Let's love reading in all forms and encourage our children to just read.

1 Day

Amanda did a fun post this week about 'a day in the life'. I did one in May while on maternity leave, and I thought it'd be fun to do another one.

The one thing about my job that is consistent is that it is inconsistent. Every day is a different experience. This week, for example, I worked from home Monday, started Tuesday at our office and ended at a client site, went to a meeting at a new client in Dallas on Wednesday, worked from our office Thursday and will work there again Friday. So every day is a little bit different which means Brent and I have to constantly arrange our days for school drop-offs/pick-ups, getting ready, evenings, etc. It definitely makes our days hectic and chaotic but always interesting!

I 'started' Thursday by being awake and working until 2:30 in the morning {big deadline Friday}, so I didn't set my alarm to get up before the kids. I knew this would make the morning extra chaotic, but there was no way I was going to get up at 6:30!

7:00 - Drew wakes up, we nurse.

Hi!!!

7:00 - 7:30 - I get ready while Drew destroys plays in our bathroom.

7:30 - I wake up Brent with the warning that I MUST leave by 8:20 {intake discussion at 9:00 with Drew's next teacher as she moves to the 'First Steps' class in January. Yay!}. I didn't take a picture of this. Ha.

7:30 - 8:00 - Drew eats breakfast in her high chair while I get both kids' lunches and all the rest of Drew's crap stuff together.

8:15 - Trent wakes up. This is unusually late for him. B and I decided he'd take T to school so we didn't have to rush him.

I didn't want to wake the bear with a request for a smile. {grin}

8:30 - Make it out the door. It was pajama day at school, so dressing the kids was very easy!

8:45 - 9:00 - Drop Drew off in her class.
9:00 - 9:30 - Intake discussion with Miss Kim. B arrives with T just as we're finishing up, so I take T into his class too.
9:30 - 10:15 - Drive to work, have a conference call, go to Starbucks, get into our offices, hotel a space, get set-up.

My view for the day.

A co-worker sent me a little Christmas tree computer program. I love it!

10:15 - 2:30 - Work, conference calls, eat lunch that I brought {another unusual event}, more work and calls.
2:30 - 3:00 - Pump! And have a conference call.

3:00 - 4:30 - More work!
4:30 - 5:15 - Drive home. Brent got the kids so I stayed about 30 minutes later since I got in late from Drew's intake.
5:15 - 6:15 - Family time!
6:15 - 10:00 - Book club happy hour! Me doing something on a weeknight is a RARE activity. I typically work for 2-3 hours every night, but we ladies decided we had to get together. And given my night before, I needed it!

10:00 - 11:30 - Blogging, pumping, should-be-working-but-am-not, TV watching, showering, reading.
11:30 - Bedtime, I hope!

And there you, my Thursday!
